| Royal Canine Junior for our Yorkie.. We would like to know if feeding our Yorkie Royale Canine Junior is good, this is what the breeder feeds all the yorkies and what they recommended, however we read on the forum that it's not the best, it's somewhere around the middle on the dog food quality scale... we want premium everything for the luxurious princess Looking forward to your replies. |

| Welcome to YT! Royal Canin is pretty middle-of-the-road, but there are dogs who do just fine with it. If you're wanting to switch her food, some good quality foods are Orijen, Natures Variety Instinct, Wellness, and Innova. Last edited by AMD; 09-21-2009 at 09:06 AM. |

| I agree with AMD. We had Sophie on Royal Canin but it does contain grains and I have noticed symptoms of a grain allergy so we have transitioned her to Orijen six fish and so far so good. I would recommend Orijen, Acana (made by same people as Orijen), Nature's Variety, Innova, Solid Gold, or Merricks. Merricks also makes a grain free food called Before Grain. There are also lots of Merricks fains on YT so I would do a search for that and any of the other foods mentioned. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | We'll I wanted premium for my baby, but he didn't like the premium food, and hasn't done well on some brands, so we use Royal Canin, and Joey doing really well on it, and has super shinny hair, but more importantly he'll eat it. If the breeder had your little girl on it, I wouldn't change for the first month or so. I think adding too much variety the first 6 months makes them more prone to allergies. Food is a highly controversial topic, and I'm not sure there are that many facts out there right now, it's hard to separate the truth from the hype. I think this web site is helpful in sorting out the truth from the fiction. The Dog Food Project - Myths about Dog Nutrition

| I think Royal Canin is a good food. I use it to wean puppies (the Baby Dog variety) because it is good quality and the small triangular shape reduces the chance for choking. As long as your dog tolerates grains, I think it is a fine food. There are some purists that will recommend a star or two higher, but I think this one will give you nice, healthy pups with a good coat. As soon as mine are old enough to leave the play yard, they go on Canidae because it is an All Life Stages food. I have a puppy, two in between, and one very old dog. They free feed so it is important for me to have a food they can all share. If not for that, I would probably stay with Royal Canin. None of mine have shown signs of grain allergies.

| Just wanted to throw in another comment... I definitely agree that RC is a good food; I just wanted to make sure you knew about the grain allergies. That's the reason we put Sophie on Orijen. But all our other animals don't get the "premium" treatment. Poor outside dog, Milo, eats the wal-mart kibble and LOVES it and he does great on it. And our 3 cats eat Iams multi-cat and Iams weight control because it works for all of them since we have one who has a very sensitive stomach. I know those aren't the best foods at all, but they work for our babies. We'll probably get the cats on something better one day, but they'll be sticking with either Iams or SD for cats for a while. |

| Go to the Health and Nutrition section and there is a recent thread about food and someone posted a link to a site that scales the different dog foods and you can see where the rating scale is. The higher the number the better the food but also take into consideration some of the high ranked foods are hard to find locally.

| I'd say it's one of those tings where we each have to decide what we do and don't want in our dogs' food. I prefer not to feed menadione and ethoxyquin. Other don't care. It seems that brown rice is better than brewers rice and RC uses brewers, I think. I wouldn't say corn is a bad thing, but it is to some dogs, etc. In short, I would not choose RC unless it was a prescription diet.

I think that people say RC is bad because it contains corn and I don't necessarily agree. Most dogs do fine with it and some do not. RC uses menadione in some of their RX foods.
