| Welcome to YT. I can't help you with food. Buddy is big, 16lbs but he's solid and not fat at all. There are several foods and treats on the market for dog's with a weight problem, however, I don't know the best ones. How about giving treats like carrots, green beans, fresh chicken pieces, all low in calories as snacks/treats. No table food at all, which he should not be getting anyhow. I would check a pet food store, not Petco or Petsmart, a better retailer that carries a better line of food and talk to them regarding a good diet food. Post pictures if you can. Diet's are brutal on all of us. |

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | My daughter is law is a nutricionist for humans but taking animal nutricion also.. since my son is a vet tech, working on his vet license and he plans to open his own clinic one day.. she suggest a good all stages food with two small servings twice a day, natural low calorie treats only one or two a day and plenty of exercise and water.. she said that he should be able to loose the weight slowly but healty, and it will take time and patience. HTH.. hugs, CArmen in nj |

Dog Food Reviews - Purina ONE Dog Healthy Weight Management Formula - Powered by ReviewPost You might try him on something like Solid Gold or Natural Balance. If your male has been neutered then that will make him more susceptible to being fat. Hopefully with exercise and patience he will continue to lose weight. | |

| Molly partially tore her cruciate ligament 6 weeks ago and the vet said she needs to lose at least 3lbs to help with the healing (her weight slowly crept up from 14lbs to 17.2lbs in the last 2 years!). You can buy a special food from the vet, but its science plan which i dont like, so i said i would cut down her normal food. Ive cut out all 'inbetween meal treats', and reduced her dried kibble. I add some veg and a few bits of boiled chicken to make her meals more interesting. She has lost just over a pound in 6 weeks which is really good considering she cant walk for more than 10 minutes a day, where before she would walk and run for an hour and a half . I would just make small adjustment in what your dog would normally have and see if that works first, rather than buy a special food. Good Luck, and please let me know if you come up with any good ideas! |

| Are you sure your Yorkie is fat and not just a bigger guy? Just because he's a large Yorkie doesn't necessarily mean he's overweight. I'd have to see a picture to tell. However; I would suggest taking him OFF of Purina One. It's not really a good food at all. If you go into a store like Pet Valu or a holisitc pet store, mom & pop type store, they sell the better brands. I'd recommend Innova, Nature's Variety, Merrick's, Natural Balance, etc.

| thank you to everyone. and its so disappointing to hear that purina one is not good for him. i specifically asked my vet which was the best and she said the purina was the best but now im thinking she suggested that because thats what they sell in our vet. i have stopped giving him treats like a month ago and cut back on his food too but now il def get more of an organic food. i have been trying to put pics but for some reason it is not letting it go thru.. my fiance says that bentley is not overweight and is very upset that the vet pretty much has me freaking out about his weight but i dont knw.. |

| Harley was over weight too! Quote:
I cut his food the first week by putting only 3/4 cup down. Once the food is gone, that's it until the next morning. The following week, I cut it down to 1/2 cup. He nows get that 1/2 cup daily and his few treats and that's it. At night when I go to bed, there's still some kibble left in the bowl, so I know he's getting enough. It took a few months for him to lose the weight, so be patient.
