| Dry skin or something else? My yorkie has been scratching, crawling on his stomach, and rolling on his back a lot lately. I took him to the vet and they said he seemed fine and maybe had dry skin and try a sensitive skin shampoo. Well he's still doing it and there are white flakes on his lower tummy and near his back legs. Today I noticed a few small scabs, what could it be? It's not fleas. Or maybe if it is dry skin is there something else I can do?

| Buy an oatmeal based shampoo and make sure he is very, very, thoroughly rinsed. Then add some Omega fatty acids to his food. You can get Omega 3 & 6 in gel caps at a health or vitamin store. Just bite the end and add about 10 drops a day. If your feeding dog food, it's the worst for skin and of course other health problems, and maybe you would consider home cooking?

| Our Douglas had the itches so bd that he actually was biting the hair off the back part of his body and creating little bite scabs. Vet's said it was probably dry skin and he was highly allergic to flea bites. We went to Comfortis for the fleas and sprayed the yard good with "Cyonara". We went with Flint River Ranch Lamb & Millet and Rice and also the Trout and Potato. We also mix in one-eigth teaspoon of cod liver oil for dogs every other day and the same amount of extra virgin olive oil the other days. He loves it all and in a matter of a week or so we could see the difference in his skin and his coat. Only itches once in awhile now, as most dogs do anyway. That might help. Good luck. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Is he licking or chewing his paws as well? If so, it sounds like some sort of allergy. Are the scabs from itching or did they just appear in an area where he can't itch? You may have to rule out a skin infection too...

| The scab he had was from where he was biting his skin on his flank (after he chewed the hair from it). But that's healed up now and his hair is growing back. He used to bit his paws too, but now only licks them once in a while like he's grooming. When he was really sick the vet had him on a steroid, and we dosed him every morning with 3 cc's of baby Benadryl. After about a week, he was getting back to normal. The biggest problem he had was some flea bites that he had and the vet said the symptoms he showed were classic for a Yorkie with a serious allegy to flea bites. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Sounds like he still could be reacting to the flea allergy and/or is also having seasonal allergies - check pollen.com for the pollens in your area right now. Whatcha feeding?

| Flint River Ranch Lamb, Rice and Millet Kibble and switch off with FRR Trout and Potato Kibble. Also add 1/8 tsp of cod liver oil or extra virgin olive oil. |

| He's not biting his paws and he doesn't have any rashes so thats why the vet said it was just dry skin. I do have liquid dog vitamins that a friend of mine gave me, I should start using that again. I will try an oatmeal based shampoo tomorrow.
