| Oh no...Thread on Dogster..."meals" as ingredients? Not only Purina in "trouble"? What on earth is going on? Can we not trust ANY pet food companies? It is not only Purina that is being gone after. It seems Wellness, TOTW, and all or any companies who use "meals" in their products? All the foods we thought were better than the "lower quality foods" are the same what we did not want to feed? And what about the companies that say they use foods "fit for human consumption"? They are in all this to? Good grief! I am so confused. Purina Pet Foods charged with lying about ingredients marked on packaging of Pet Food! - Food & Nutrition Forum

| I am going to have to do some more research on this. Basically it is saying that all "meals" can contain by-products and foods claiming to be free of by-products that list "meals" are lying. This is getting horrible! If you can't even believe what they put on the label for ingredients, what are you supposed to do. I guess the answer goes back to home-made again! I did cook for mine for quite a while but decided they would actually get a better all around nutrition from a high quality commercially prepared food. But if they just lie about ingredients, I think I can do better than that...... I will post back if I find anything more. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention!

| You are right! It is beyond scary. In today's world the best offense is a great defense. Don't take what someone,or some comglomerate tells you as gospel. Research the ingredients and the companies portfolio of subsidiaries and suppliers. Having been educated in Nutrition, I have seen more then most people want to hear about. Not just in the pet food industry, but in foods designed for human consumption. We are definitely not in Kansas anymore, Dorothy! |

| I think it's important to remember that definitions use in the dog food world are very broad (like there can be feathers in the food if they slip by in good processing practices). Who decides what "good" is? Then it could be debated that by-products aren't a bad thing at all. Sure, it sounds horrible to us, but are the animal ingredients in "holistic" food nutritionally better for a dog? Nope, probably not. While I prefer not to feed by-products because the thought is gross, I can't say it is wrong to do so. While I used to be into the holistic food thing (and still am to an extent), it seems that their products can be just as questionable as every other company. For instance, the nice pictures of vegetables that go into "premium" foods. What are the chances that veggies that look like that are being used? Almost zero. If they were that good, humans would get them. You don't know unless you make it yourself and even then we still don't know because everything has been through some type of processing.

| Its getting pretty bad when we can't even trust what they say. I called Blue Buffalo when all the recalls were coming in and they assured me they were not one of the ones recalled. It wasn't 2 days later when they too were on the list. The over vaccinations, the flea prdoucts....... we are slowly killing our babies. Even some of our foods are not fit to eat. Its getting scary as heck. I lost one to cancer and I don't want to lose anymore to it. |

| Honestly, I'm not surprised at any of the brands on there. People think food like Eukanuba and Iams are high quality. They really aren't that much better than Pedigree. Nutro was recalled earlier this year, so I'm not surprised there either. I know I sound like a broken record, but that's why I stick to Orijen. They also make Acana. Innova, California Natural, Evo are also decent choices. |

| Tootsie and I have been through about 4 different brands of dog food since we got her in May...I am soooo confused~the more I read the more confused I get!!! She has allergies so she has been eating "Natural Balance Potato & Duck" for the last 3 weeks... Just recently found out that it contains Ethoxyquin...So we went out yesterday looking for Innova, Evo or California's Natural any of the 3 in a puppy formula...To no avail we ended up with a small bag of "NOW" natural grain free puppy formula. After reading the ratings on the NOW puppythis morning, I found out it is not rated any higher than the Natural Balance??? My problem is that we live in the country and had to drive about 30 miles to the nearest "All Natural" pet food store which didn't have any of the foods we were originally looking for... I would like to get a good quality food for her and stick with it!!!

I believe so much in feeding a high quality food, here is my offer: We have a great boutique here in town that sells Orijen, Innova, Evo, CN, etc... I'm willing to pick up food for anyone and ship it to you. I will not charge you anything but the price I pay and the exact shipping cost. For those who want to feed Orijen, my store has 1 pound sample bags for $2. I simply buy 3-4 of these at a time. Keeps food fresh and will last half the month. So I'm only paying $16 a month for Lily to eat Orijen. We feed the puppy because of its small bites, but they have all varieties in the sample bags. Feel free to pm me if anyone wants to take me up on this offer. Last edited by ArmyWife313; 09-09-2009 at 07:40 AM. | |

| Yes, we inquired about that yesterday..The smallest bag that this particular store could order was 15lbs. I was a little concerned about ordering that much at once since she is a very picky eater...But, I am considering ordering straight from the website if possible.

| Dogs are natural carnivores and in the wild would have high protein. High protein does not cause liver or kidney problems, but if your dog already has them, it could possibly exacerbate them. |
