| Is my Yorkie too small to safely spay? Hi everyone, my little Rio is 6 months old and weighs 2 lbs. 11 oz. I want to have her spayed but I'm afraid she is so little and the anesthesia/surgery will be too dangerous for her. I don't think she will get much bigger - I'll be surprised if she gets to 3 lbs. Should I wait until she is older and possible gets bigger? Or is it safe to have her spayed now? Thank you all for your advice in advance! |

| Most on here believe that as long as your vet has lots of experience with small dogs that you should have your furbaby spayed b4 first heat cycle. I waited till my Toots was older she weighs 4 pds 5 ozs she was 15 months old. However do not wait you only put them at risk for mamary tumors or they can die from pyametrea (infection of uterus) My (Tedi 9 years old ) had this when I had her spayed, I did not know it vet said she would have died in a couple days if I had not gotten her in for spay. :-( If I had to do again would have spayed both earlier!!!!

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i had morgan spayed at 6 months and she was under 3lbs. probably about the same as yours. She did great. i recommend getting them spayed at 6 months as long as you trust your vet's abilities. if you don't then find another vet who can do it.
