| What age is a senior dental prophy? What age is a senior dental prophy? I just found out from a neighbor that the price goes up when they get older. My dog is 5 1/2 yrs.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | typically its 8 years old for a small dog. The price goes up because they need to do more pre-op testing before they can be put under. That's the way it was when i worked as a tech in general practice.

They are probably adding wxtra bloodwork and some vets just start doing preop bloodwork when a dog turns seven (scary). IMO, the price should not go up a ton because most of the precautionary testing needs to be done on every dog.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | at the last general practice i worked at we would do a small inhouse blood panel before surgery on a lot, but not all patients before surgery. On dogs over 8 we did a larger in house blood panel and an EKG. At at emergency/referral hospital we would do a full CBC/Chem in house on all patients, a chest rad (cancer check) on dogs 7 and older, and an EKG on the ones that needed it (depended on other health problems as well as age). so the pre-op testing would be different per case and situation which would explain the price increase. every dog doesn't get the same testing especially in a general practice where the patients are mostly healthy.
