| Pet Health Insurance? Hey Yorkie Lovers...I was just wondering how many of you have health insurance for your little ones. I have Toby insured through VPI and pay $45 a month and EVERYTHING is covered. It seems that some people think pet insurance is a stupid waste but pesonally I sleep better knowing that God forbid anything should happen to him I would never have to make a devastating decision based on what I could afford.

| I guess it all depends on your financial situation as well as your comfort with savings/investing. I would guess that the average year I spend less than $1000 on vet care for my pups. (I have 3 of them-including one Search and Rescue Dog) when you consider vaccinations, teeth cleaning, incidental accidents/illnesses. It remains pretty consistantly less than $1000 a year (as long as we don't have a neuter or spay, which usually aren't covered by insurance anyway) So...for me, I have looked, it would be around $120 a month. $120 x 12 = $1,440 which is way over what I pay in a normal year....so....if I take that same amount and put it in a savings account that accrues interest, after 3 or 4 years I will have about $5,000 in the account. Even after I take the few hundred out every year....I would STILL have a fund for payment of an emergency issue and if I never have an issue, well, I have the funds to buy another puppy or toys or whatever. I do not see how it makes sense to pay another company to essentially do your saving for you, then not give you access to it if you don't use it. But that is just me...If we had a multi-thousand dollar incident, I could work out payment with out vet based on years of a personal relationship with an independent practice, not a commercially based one, so, I feel confident my savings will be the better option in the long run.

| I will be getting Pet Plan or Embrace. They DO cover everything including Hip and Elbow D, as well as hereditary defects. Except for wellness checkups which at this point she only needs once or twice a year so I just pay for those out of pocket. VPI does not cover these things. |

| Mine are on the Wellness plan through Banfield/Petsmart. It has been great but they have had some personnel changes so I am considering a more broad insurance as I found a local vet that makes house calls! I will have to research some of the other carriers mentioned! |
