| Is poppin knee cap the same as luxating patella? I took Maddie to the vet for her last round of puppy shots and her rabies shot (which she reacted fine to, thank god!) and when the vet was checking her over she said that her right knee cap was popping. She said it is something that they need to keep and eye on. I was trying to figure out what that really means and while searching the forum I found a lot on luxating patella. Is her "popping knee cap" the same as luxating patella? |

| Yup The knee cap pops in and out of place with LP. You're not alone though. A good portion of Yorkies have it...

You need to start doing some research about luxating patellas and surgery, because if it gets bad enough, you need to have the knowledge to decide whether surgery is the route you want to take. Many live just fine with it and some need surgery.

| Bailey is a level 1 LP. She had an issue with it when she was about 8 mos old. I was considering taking her to an ortho to discuss surgery (per the vet's advice) - but wanted to wait until after the holidays. Oddly, after the initial vet visit, Bailey never limped again. A few weeks ago, someone posted that their dog's LP was aggravated by surgery....so, it kinda makes sense to me that Bailey's spay aggravated her LP for a few weeks? Not sure that is really what happened - but it makes perfect sense to me. She's two and half now and is still a level 1. So, I guess what I'm saying - if your baby starts to limp - please don't jump to surgery right away.

| So I've been reading up on LP and I realized that Maddie hops like a bunny a lot when she is running. I wonder if I should call the vet and mention that....ugh..I can't believe this is happening to my baby! |

| The more I read, the more freaked out I am getting. Should I take her to a specialist? She is only 17 weeks old and I would like to do everything I can to make sure the problem doesn't worsen. I live in Columbia, MO and I know the Mizzou Vet Clinic has several orthopedics there. Maddie won't be seen by her regular vet until November when she gets spayed (poor baby has to stay overnight!! ) I know I am probably going a little over the top with my concerns, but I am such a worrier....any advice? |

Try to keep her from jumping up on and down from furniture. She is young enough to train not to do those things. That kind of activity is rough on them! The vet was simply informing you and saying they will keep an eye on it. She may never have a problem and may never need surgery! Relax and enjoy her!

| Don't freak out yet. Many puppies can actually grow out of the problem by strengthening the tendons, ligaments and muscles associated. It is important to never, ever let her jump on or off the furniture. Its very important that she doesn't jump.

| At Lily's check up on Friday, vet said she has a grade 1 LP on her back left leg. It's not severe or causing her a problem though so we'll just watch it. She's 5.5 months old. |
