| Itching and dog food My Yorkie is just over a year old. He was one taste of the wild and did ok but really does not eat it very well. This last week I tried Pro Plan Select turkey and barley. He is scratching so much! I gave him benadryl today because I feel so sorry for him. I have looked back through some of the old post but need some suggestions. I would like to find something that he will eat and that does not cause him to scratch so much. Theresa |

| I would definitely change his food asap. Different dogs can be allergic to different things so you will have to keep trying different foods until you find one or two he tolerates. I'm thinking the barley may have set him off, I would find one without it. Also, get a journal and keep detailed notes on what you feed him and his reactions, if any or not. Would be helpful if you need to go to the vets. As long as you're sure the food is what's making him itch?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Where is he itching and when did the itching start? Food allergies only account for about 10% of canine allergies, so not sure this is food related. That said - if a dog has any allergies whatsoever, I would recommend a grain free, quality protein food. I might get him off that barley, which can be an allergen.

| Well, I took him to the vet today for his shots and asked her about it. (The vet I like was not there) She told me that it was not a food allergy because those usually start on their face and paws. She said it was probably just an allergy to something else and that he could have a steroid shot but that it could not be given at the same time as his rabies shot. I really think it is the food because that is the only thing that has changed. He is itching all over, his head, back, stomach. I have not seen him chewing on his feet or anything. I just feel so bad for him. I am going to continue with the benadry and try another brand of food. Theresa |

| I went through hell with my 10 yr.old Molly. She has had all these food allergies, some said it was enviroment, some food......//./../..//.She has had skin biopsies, blood work, bloodwork, bloodwork did I say bloodwork, a 1500.00 toe amputation from licking it till it was so infected! All in all I have about 5000.00 in vet bills for the same thing it is a food allergy. It took me along time to find out what cause it was all trial and error. I now have her on a holistic foo Blue Buffalo sweet potato and fish with no corn! She also cant have carrots, very little apple or anything off the beaten path or she scratches and licks herself crazy. I would try a good food with very little fillers no corn or barley and /or rice yes rice. Debbie

| Poor Molly. I am glad that you finally found something for her. Has anyone tried Bakery Blends? It carried in a dog specialty store here called Three Dogs Bakery. The owners are so nice. They have several Mastifs that they take to the store with them. Plus they foster Mastifs. I went in there one day and they had one there that I would have taken home if I could have. They told me that he had been found wondering the streets and was 60lbs under weight. He had been someones pet because he was housebroken, crate trained and loved kids. Theresa |

| Winston had the same problem. I noticed that he was always rubbing his face on his paws especially after eating. I switched him to a food that didn't have corn in it and problem solved. It most likely is a food allergy but it is tricky to pinpoint what ingredient is causing the allergy. I switched him from royal canine to nature's recipe and he is doing much better now. Good luck solving your baby's problem

| Because of when it started, I would look at food first. If you hadn't switched foods, then I would think environmental. Other causes of itching such as mites have been ruled out, right?

| Yes, I had him checked for when I took him to the vet. And he does not have any flees either. So, I am really thinking it is a food allergy especially since it happened right after the food change. Of course I also caught him eatting the cat food the other day! Now the cat food is put up so he has no other choice but to eat the dog food he is given. I am going to see if I can find the natural balance and try that. Theresa |
