Help!!!!!

Hello all,

I hope you can help. I bought an 8 week old yorkie from a local breeder. We picked him up last Saturday. Well Tuesday night Dolce had white worms in his stool. We took him to the vet he has worms and fleas. The vet gave him a shot of strongrid. Then he gave us another dose to give him in 10 days. We used advantage that night. The next morning there were 2 live fleas in his crate. The vet said that worms will pass in his stool for a few days. Thursday night (lastnight) he had live worms in his stool. There were white and moving around. Should I take him back to the vet or is this normal?? I feel so bad for our puppy. But I also worry if he is infesting our home. The said we can bomb our house. So I am going to go to the pet store and get something. If anyone has a great deal of experience with this. Please let me know any tips and what to do. He also has horrible breathe. What to do about that??

Thanks,
DolcesMom

The worms in his stool are perfectly normal for just being wormed as they do have to pass them - make sure you dispose of the poop right away. Fleas are a huge pain in the butt though. Vacume like crazy to get as many of the fleas and eggs out of the carpet. Keep all of his bedding clean too. You can buy flea stuff from pet stores that you can put in the carpet to kill fleas.... I think you just vacume after using it. About the breath, puppies always have nasty breath - it's just puppy breath and they outgrow it. Hope this helps

Thanks for the response. It is so scary. I worry most about the fleas. I am going to Petco tonight to get some stuff. The vet told me it would take a few weeks to get rid of the worms. He slept in our bed the first night but I have him sleeping in his crate. He doesn't like that. Is there anything to do with the puppy breathe?

I've never known puppy breathe at 8 weeks to be nasty. My little guys is not bad at all and he just turned 8 weeks on Wed. Check at Petco when you are there, there are tablets you can give them. But, just double check the age and dosage.

Thanks. I will give them a look. His breathe smells like poop. I have had a cold the last few days and can still smell it.

you might want to keep an eye on him and watch and see if he's eating his poop...breath that smells strong like poop isn't normal for a puppy that young. they usually have "puppy breath" but lots of people, including myself, love the way it smells and it isn't a very strong odor. just keep an eye on him and see. if he's eating poop there are things you can do for that as well

Don't forget to brush his teeth every day. That helps with the bad breath.

Leah had a nasty breath as a pup but as a deterrent I got her fresh breath spray from the pet store every time she ate her poo she got her fresh breath spray. Now we use pet toothpaste (Don't use human toothpaste there is something in it that makes them ill) and she gets her teeth brushed in the morning when I am brushing mine. You can get toothbrushes that fit on your finger or children’s toothbrushes work as well

There are things that you can get to put on their food to keep them from eating their own poop.

Have you contacted the breeder you got him from to let them know about all of these problems?
Also, Capstar is an immediate flea destroyer available through the vet, though he may be too young/small. I would strip and debug all your bedding and keep him far away from any upholstered, carpeted areas of your home until he is flea free. Spray everything, including areas of the yard and bathe him with a rotenone shampoo. Fleas can remain dormant for an eternity and reinfest easily.
The bad breath is not normal and may be a sign of illness, or caused by the wormer or related to feces ingestion, which will reintroduce the worms. Keep a very close eye on him for further problems.
Make sure you begin bite inhabition/socialization training now, since he was removed from his litter mates too young to learn correct behavior.
Best of Luck!

I have contacted the breeder. She hasn't offered any help just advice. Dolce has his 2nd worming October 1st. His next Vet appointment is 10/5/05. I hope he checks out ok. I have washed all of our bedding. I wash and change his bedding daily. My Concern are the fleas. I bought some powder that is supposed to kill fleas. How can I tell if they are in the carpet. The think that scars me is my head is really itchy. The first night we got Dolce he slept by my head. I don't know if it is due to the dry weather or just a coincidence. Thanks for everyones help. His breathe is some what ok. His breathe has stunk since we got him. I will ask the vet.

You may want to really keep an eye on him about eating his poop since he has worms. Maybe not though since noone else has mentioned it. I would think though that it wouldn't be the best thing for him to be eating them. Maybe he would continue to get them? I don't know, others may know more about this. I'm sorry you're having these problems, but I know once you get everything straightened out you'll forget all about the trouble, your pup is well worth it I'm sure.

I don't think Dolce is eating his poop. He has been good about going outside. But has some accidents which I pick up and quickly flush down the toilet. His bad breath comes and goes. I bought him some nylabones today and he seems to like them. Although we bought him a lot of chew toys but he prefers my slippers..lol I can't wait until he has a complete clean bill of health. He is precious. Thanks everyone for you advice.

Since your puppy is so young, you souldn't be using a lot of chemicals around him. When I had fleas in my house, I googled home remeidies for fleas and found a lot of helpful advise. I myself found that putting some water in a baking dish with some dish soap and then putting a lit candle in the middle of the dish, of course put candle in a candle holder, overnite for a week got rid of my flea problem. Fleas are attracted to heat and light and so they jump towards the light and fall in the water where they drown. I found so many on the first nite it was disgusting, especially since I am a clean freak, I never would have thought there were that many. About your head itching, it could be that you are thinking of these fleas so much its all in your mind. That happens to me when I think about itchy stuff. & yes DONNOT let him eat his poop, he will keep getting re-infested. It seems to me like the breeder didn't properly care for him, so he probably ate his poop a lot before you got him, without her noticing, and it could be still affecting him. Good luck and I hope he gets well soon!
