TJ has IBD & Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth! Well after 4 months, we have finally found out why TJ has his episodes of gurgling noises, mucus and/or bloody mucus poop, and sometimes vomitting. He has Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and he has very high levels of Bacterial Overgrowth in his Small Intestines. He and Roxy must remain on the special diet - IVD - Duck and Potato. And TJ has to go on meds (Flagyl - Metronidazole) for 2-3 weeks. We go forward from there. Maybe he will be better or maybe he will have to continue with Meds. The Vet said there is NO CURE, but it is controllable! THANK GOD! I wanted to say THANKS so much to all you YTers that have been so kind and helpful to me these past months in my times of need. I am just so happy that I know what is wrong with TJ now and that I can finally help him lead a happy and healthy Yorkie life!

Can you tell me more about this or tell me where to find more info? Also, can you tell me more about the diet you are feeding her? We've had Kita for about 5 weeks now and except for the vomittung, this descibes her symptoms to a tee. The gurgling noises this little 2 pound girl makes are phenomenal - you can hear it clearly from across the room. All the mucus has me worried even though she seems happy otherwise. Any info you can provide would be much appreciated.

I am sorry to hear Kita is not feeling so well. Please take her to the Vet. It could be many things: food allergies, something she is eating around the house, she could have a sensitive tummy, or she could have digestive issues. The Vet will discuss all possiblities and will put you on a plan of trying figure out what is bothering her. I would highly recommend the Vet taking fecal sanmples and also blood. TJ's fecale sample were all negative (we did many). My Vet ran blood tests for: 1. CBC/Biochemical Profile 2. Urine Bile Acid 3. B12/folate/TLI Everything came back normal, except his 'folate levels' were EXTREMELY high. The Vet said that no one can tell me that TJ has IBD or Crohn's, they really can't even say for sure that he has bacterial overgrowth in his small intestines. The only way they could say for sure is if they were it go in a see what's going on. BUT, from his GI test results they see that his folate levels are really high and they can lean towards thinking he has a bacterial overgrowth in the upper portion of his small intestines. He said hopefully the Flagy will work. TJ has to be on it for 2 weeks and then I call in to report and we go from there, unless he has a flare up before hand, then I bring him in and he may need cortizone (sp?) and I have to stick with the special diet for now. Please bring her to the Vet. Ihave had this going on with TJ for 4 months and only now are we starting to make some progress. I have another Vet appt. on this Friday, b/c over the weekend while we all were vacationing in AZ, TJ had 2 flare ups. I will keep you posted as to what we are going to do next with TJ. **Krishna's Mom, please feel free to PM me anytime. I will telling you anything you want to know, plus I'd like to know how Kita is doing! I hope this helps you a little???

No, Roxy doesn't have any problems. She has to eat the same food though, b/c I can't be ontop of them to make sure TJ wouldn't eat her food. It is just easier. But she is easy going, she LOVES the new food!

Hi Nicole, Thank you for such a nicely detailed response. Kita was scaring the heck out of me! I took her to the vet and had her checked over. The fecal sample came back with a sky overgrowth of a bacteria whose name I can neither pronounce nor remember at this moment. It is a naturally occurring virus in the intestines and she really can't tell me why it decided to start growing like mad. I think I stopped hearing when our doc said contagious to humans. The number one antibiotic for what she has is Baytril, but she is too young to have it as it has been known to have some serious side effects so she is on the second best medication for it which is Clindamycin for 10 days. The vet wants to wait to see how that works before she goes further. Krishna can't "catch" it from her so no worries there, but apparently hubby and I can so for the next couple of weeks we have to wash our hands after handling her (boy is that going to be tough to remember). The vet says we will know if we get it as we will be having the same symptoms - vomitting and diarrhea. It was sort of a surprise to me. I guess I didn't realize that we could catch anything from our babies. Hopefully this will be the end of it though. If not, we will have to continue with a plan of action as you suggested. Thanks so much for sharing all your info. Best, Julie
