I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Wow, that's horrible, may I ask how you were using it? Some people think you are suppose to brush with it, but it's not a toothpaste, you would have to use too much and the dog would swallow too much. You just put a tiny bit on the teeth 30 minutes after a meal or water. It's said to soften tartar, and make it easier to brush away at a later time with pet toothpaste. If you don't get any replies, both Wylie's Mom and Ellie May have spoken of alternatives that are said to be safe and effective, but I can't remember the names. You might want to PM them. Ellie May said the kind she recommended had to be purchased from a dentist. Besides using Petzlife, we use Merrick Bully sticks, and I think they do an excellent job of helping keep teeth free of tartar, and of course we brush, as well, with poultry flavored toothpaste. At three, Joeys teeth are white with no signs of any tartar.

| thanks for the reply; i do put a very small amount on my finger and then wipe it on her teeth and gum; it might not be the petzlife and i would like to use something different that is natural, safe and effective. any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Aw, poor baby! I wonder if he's just extra sensitive to the smell or an ingredient. You could try ProDen's Plaque Off - it's a sprinkle you put on their food. Interestly, many vets are starting to carry it, so it seems like some validation. I just picked some up last week at pet food boutique...but you can get it online too.

| I use DentalRinse from Petsmart. 4 tablespoons to a gallon of drinking water, never had any adverse effects and it also gives them nice breath. A 16 oz bottle is $7.99.

| thanks for the advise; i should have mentioned that i did try using plaque off; however Ava turns away from the food; she doesnt like the smell of it; it does have a fishy smell, i guess because it has seeweed in it. i did extensive research on this subject and bought petzlife, plaque off, biotene gel. do yo think i can just put the plaque off on her teeth instead of watiing for her to eat it; maybe that will work

| I used to use PetzLife and also a dental rinse you put in the water - neither did very much. I now use Oxyfresh Pet Gel for brushing . It is very gentle, yet works greats. I also use the Oxyfresh Pet Oral Hygiene Solution in their water (wtih distilled water). Following brushing I use Aromadog's Bluto's Yummy Gum Brush - with a q-tip I wipe along all the teeth front and back and then the roof of the mouth and the tongue. The results have been amazing and we have completely fresh smelling breath all the time as well!!!!! You can find Oxyfresh products on Ebay and the Bluto's came from Apparel Clothing Accessories for Toy Dogs Small Dog Maltese Yorkie Shih Tzu.

| Prince also would vomit when I used Petzlife gel, at first. I now use a tiny drop of it with his C.E.T. toothpaste, and he no longer throws up. I use a very small amount, though. He had his teeth cleaned about two years ago, and they are still nice and white. The vet said to keep doing what I am doing.

| We use OraVet, CET vanilila-mint toothpaste (not the rinse...contains xylitol), floss and sometimes Maxiguard. Not surprising on the Petzlife. I think there are better products out there... If you are going to use it, it should be used in extremely small amounts, however, on the bottle that I had, it said you could brush with it...

| I still brush daily, so I don't know if the water treatment has made a huge difference or not - I can just tell you that this combination of products has gotten rid of lors of tartar and any bad breath they ever had!!!!!

Donating YT 500 Club Member | After reading another thread on raw diet I looked online and found that raw diet helps with tartar. I'm going to incorporate it into my pups diet. What Are the Benefits of the Raw Food Diet for Dogs? | eHow.com My puppies do not appreciate a tooth brush...
