| Worried she's getting fat MY Madison is 14 mos old. She gets about 1/3 cup of dry food ( evo small bites) and about 2 tbs wet evo canned total each day divided into breakfast and dinner. With 2 or 3 small bite size pieces of chicken jerky as treats. My Maltese Lexie gets the same thing. Although lexie doesn't always eat it all and sometimes (not always) madison will finish it. Lexie is thin 5 lbs can feel ribs. Madison is 'thick' solid and weighs at least a lb more. I guess I need to take her to a scale to find out her weight. I worry she's getting fat or is overweight already. She runs for an hour to 90 mins a day m-f as we have doggie playdate. plus we go for one 30 min walk daily. So she gets lots of exercise. She would eat more if I gave her more but I'm obviously not starving her. The other yorkies we play with are smaller. and Yet I've seen bigger yorkies. So how do I know if she's ok, or needs to lose weight? I don't want stress on knees or any other problems that come with overweight dogs. any insight will be appreciated. We won't go to the vet for her yearly shots and check up until Nov. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | This thread describes methods to determine if your dog is overweight or not: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...oco-obese.html It also has some pictures of yorkies at different weights. Hope that helps.

| As long as you can feel your dogs ribs freely, without really pushing down on them, and if they have a noticable waistline is when you know they are in a good weight class. If you feel they are overweight, cut back on how much you are feeding, and be careful with wet food as well. Good Luck!

| A 14 week old puppy should have a nice round belly. I doubt she's fat. Your vet is the best one to tell you if her weight is appropriate. Have him check her when she goes in for her next round of shots. |

| My Bella is 10 months and she is a little heavy too..the vet told me to cut back her food, because she hit 9 lbs the last time she was there! So, I feed her 1/3 cup of dry food (evo small bites) in the morning with only a smidge of wet food...like 2 teaspoons..and then dinner its the same thing...during the day i give her some treats too...but I have cut that down a lot as well..especially since she took a training class and we had to treat them a LOT..so i'm thinking that's how she gained a lot of her weight... i play with her so much during the day...take her on walks too.. but yes, i think that you just need to cut back on the wet food. I used to give her a lot of wet food, and my vet said that it is pretty rich in fats and all the other good stuff, so she told me to cut back a lot on that. hope this helps! :-) so far...Bella is 8.6 lbs |

| Here's our routine. About 1/3 cup food divided in half. so about 1/6th cup of dry evo small bites with 1 measuring tablespoon of evo wet mixed in. (Not a heaping spoon but measured exactly) Both dogs my maltese who's thin and my yorkie who feels like the chunk both eat the same. I'd say Madison the yorkie chunk actually runs around and plays more then Lexie. We go to doggie play group m-f for 60 -90 mins where Madison is running and wrestling the whole time. Where lexie lays in the shade or finds someone to hold her. My husband thinks maybe from all the running and wrestling she does daily that she's 'muscular' she does have a narrow hips compared to shoulders and I can feel ribs but do have to GENTLY press. Maybe this is just her build and I'm worried for no reason. we don't go to the vet for annual check up until november. |
