| Question about Renal Failure I am hoping that someone here can help me, especially when it comes to genetics. I was contacted by someone that has a puppy from my same breeder. Her puppy and my Brody share the same father (not from the same litter). I am so thankful this person contacted me to give me a heads up but I am a little worried. Her puppy seems to be having kidney issues and won't know for sure until tests are done tomm. My Brody went in for his neutuer and the vet never said anything about his lab work. I mentioned to my vet the new information I had and she was going to do some research as to the genetics and have some blood work done on Brody today at 2 PM (just to make sure). The vet did tell me that the breeder should have DNA or Kidney biopsy done on the father to rule out everything. I have tried to contact the breeder but I am assuming she is on vacation or very busy. Meanwhile I am sitting here desperately waiting for 2PM and praying that my Brody is OK. He is not exhibiting any symptoms but from what I've read online they sometimes don't show any symptoms. Please pray for my Brody and if you have any information please let me know.

| I am bumping this ... maybe someone who has experience will be ablke to give you some advice... So many different factors can affect the kidney function... environmental , food ... i mean bad food ( like the recalled foods a while back) , poisoning... and yes, genetic ... but also congenital, these are 2 different things... If your baby is fine i am sure you have no reasons to be freaking out right now, but of course it is better to have him checked out just in case, i would assume a blood work will be the first step... I am wondering what kind of benefit the DNA test would be... are you that is what the vet suggested? The biopsy i am sure will show if kidney is functioning well at the cellular level and more.... Good luck !!!!!! Hope your baby is just fine !!!!

| My Remy had problems with his kidneys and was put on a special diet. He was 11 when he was first diagnosed. I thought it was the end of the world when I got the news but he managed to live till 14 which is more or less a small dog's life spam. |

| Hey there! Just FYI the breeder IS on vacation. I have a puppy from the same breeder as well. My Roxy does not have the same dad as your Brody BUT does have the same dad as her (the person who contacted you) other pup who does have JRD. I have been worried about this as well but according to what I heard, BOTH parents have to carry the trait in order for it to be JRD. Roxy appears to be fine and except for tiny pee pees (which I have learned are for treats) does not seem to have any symptoms. You can PM me anytime.

| Prayers coming your way. I don't have experience with kidney issues, BUT my pups have the same father, and I know of 3 others people with pups from the same father ~ all have different Mother's. Anyway, ALL the pups have luxating patellas and a couple have liver issues (including mine). It is best to get him testing, and hopefully the breeder will do the same |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I got Dixie in Dec of 2007 from the same breeder as Pixie. She was 6 months old and seemed fine, I noticed when she peed it was clear and had no odor. she acted fine. I had her checked out just because I thought it was odd. Well she had congenital kidney failure, her kidney's were very underdeveloped. My vet said nothing they could do, but I took her to a nephrologist that said he had treated many dogs and yorkies with very little kidney function and they were doing ok. So we did all the testing, started her on 3 of 6 meds she would need to be on and she got so sick we had to put her down. I had her only a short 5 weeks. The breeder was great and felt as bad as I did and gave me Roxie when I was ready. The nephrologist said it was a fluke and not genetic just like many birth defects, it just happens. All the others in her litter were fine. So hopefully your baby will be fine.

| We just got back from the vet..... Brody's creatine is 1.1 mg/dl and his phos is 5.9 Bun was high 38 but his Urinalysis u.sp.gr. 1.01 which is his urine concentration (good). No blood in the urine, U. Protein it says Trace . U Sediment is U RBC 0-1 and U WBC 1-2, He does have a moderate bacterial infection in his urine and he is on antibiotics for 12 days. She did see some crystalization (? sp) in the urine possible kidney stones. My vet seems to think that his bun was elevated because he is dehydrated and not because it involves his kidneys at this point. All of his other levels were normal. She did suggest testing his bun again next month and his urine and to take it from there with a sonogram if needed. She also suggested changing his food he is on Orijen now and she said c/d Hills (because of the possibility of kidney stones. If anyone has any suggestions (especially about the food) or opinions please let me know. As of right now I am so thankful.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am glad everything looks pretty good. Dixie's BUN was off the regular vets charts and within one week went from 400 to 600 so it is good his was so low. The BUn can get off by several minor things them go back to normal.

| In people as well as kidney failure a lot of extra protein can cause high BUN's. I do not know if it is the same in dogs but maybe he is getting too much protein. If he is dehydrated that will cause and increased BUN in people too. We feed Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. The dogs love it. I hope that helps I am in the renal field for people ; )
