| Liver Issues? I am here at work bored, and I am new to the site, so I figured Id browse it. And for some reason I started reading the emergency/sick thread. I'm a man, and I consider myself a manly man lol..And it just saddened me..I had to stop reading it. My heart goes out to all of you guys But anyway, this got me thinking. Is there some liver issue that i should be worried about. My puppy is approaching 1 year old. She is a Yorkshire/Maltese mix. People call it a Morkie. But anyway, I have read that this hybrid actually can be healthier and have less issues than purebreds. I take her to the vet pretty often to make sure shes in good health. But after reading a few of those posts in there. I am concerned, what are the risks. I saw someone posted a Liver Cleansing Diet. Can I feed her that? How often should I feed her it? I currently only feed her organic food. or food that is natural. No Radiation. No Meal. no By-products. She may however get a decent portion of human food.(my dad spoils the heck out of her, when No one is looking) So I am just really curious as to what I should be worried about. |

Dr. Center recommends that all breeds affected by liver shunts (which includes Yorkies and Maltese) have a bile acids test when they are 20 weeks old as a precaution. The test is simple and inexpensive (under $100) and will tell your vet if she has any underlying liver disease. I'd get one done to put your mind at ease.

| oh ok, thank you very much. Now I saw a post about "Liver cleansing diet with milk thistle" Do people just straight up feed their dogs this? As their new diet? or is this something you do every few months? |

| The liver cleansing diet with milk thistle is for dogs with liver disease, not for a healthy dog. It is not a preventative. A bile acids test will tell you if your Morkie has liver disease or not. |

I guess i will have to get that test done. Is that a standard test that is done at the 20 week mark, My mother took her in a few times to the vet while i was away on work. So perhaps they already did it. I will be sure to ask next time shes in for a checkup. I really appreciate the help!!

| The bile acids test has to be requested. Quite a few vets will tell you not to do it if the dog doesn't have symptoms. That is your choice though. If you want it done and your vet won't do it, there are plenty who will. The liver cleansing diet could "possibly" be given to a healthy adult dog, but there is really no reason to.
