| I’ve given my girls kidney problems from too many treats My vet called & informed me that both girls have kidney problems, why because of the liver treats which are 67% protein and bully sticks that are also high on protein. I’m also wondering if eggs are too high on protein if given everyday. I can’t believe I’ve done this. The food they are on is Acana 33% protein. I took them off Wellness, which is 36%. Will they need to be put on special food and can the kidney be repaired if looked after probably. I took a pee sample in this morning and will find out Monday how severe it is. I can’t believe how stupid I am, I’ve read that too high of protein can cause damage. Also I’ve discovered that I’ve been giving too much Grizzly Salmon oil which is 99.99% fat. So I’m fatting up both girls who is having a hard time when we walk they both are hyperventilating and won’t walk as long as they use to, or is it related to the kidney problems. We are on a whole new diet, well I’ll have to find out what I shld do. So be careful on the protein factors. Chelsea is 2 ½ years and DaisiMae is 1 ½ years old.

| Hmmm, high protein diets haven't been shown to cause kidney problem but the protein has to be lowered if problems come it. That said, I am not comfortable with higher protein diets because I'm not convinced that they are perfectly safe. You could look into Azodyl. I think it's odd that they both have the problem though.

| High protein diets are great for some large, working breeds, but many vets feel they are not appropriate for toy breed dogs. It's so hard to know what to do since there are good arguments on either side. Hopefully both your Yorkies will improve on a lower protein diet. |

| I think you might be jumping to conclusions and assuming that the treats gave your pets kidney problems. It could be something totally unrelated to that. Supposedly a high protein diet doesn't harm healthy kidneys. But I understand that there are many people who believe otherwise. Is there anyway they could have gotten into some medicine, such as tylenol or similar? Did you ask your vet what caused the kidney problems?? I would ask him and get his opinon and then ask what the treatment plan is. |

| here's a good article that explains kidney disease very well. No where does it say that kidney problems are CAUSED by high protein diets. (Although once it is diagnosed, you go to a lower protein food). Kidney Disease: Causes, Signs, Diagnosis and Treatment in Dogs and Cats Any way they could have gotten into antifreeze? It smells good to them and tastes sweet. Just a few licks can cause kidney failure. I still think it could be some sort of toxin or even a hereditary quirk rather than treats. Good luck. |
