| seborrhoeic dermatitis Hi all , My baby has a scaly skin rash called seborrhoeic dermatitis(aka cradle cap in babies). The vet gave us a shampoo for it with sulphur, salicylic acid and an anti seborrhoeic. Once they had given him a take by mouth medicine that worked. (But this time it wasn't as severe.) In the summer he gets the rash, but in the winter he doesn't get it. Have any of your babies had this problem? What works for you? I use the shampoo, tea tree oil (dilute) and antibacterial cream (for humans). Also how often do you bathe your Yorkie? I use an organic dog shampoo. Thanks! Chibimaru says Thank you!

| My dog does not have seb. derm but she does have yeast due to her allergies and her dermatologist gave us Maleseb shampoo -- it also works on seborrheic dermatitis in dogs. If you have not done so already, you might consider taking your dog to a board certified veterinary dermatologist as they are specialists in allergies/skin. I would only use antibiotic cream on the dog if the skin is broken. I bathe my yorkie with allergies once per week. I use the Maleseb when her skin is "scaly" and itchy. Otherwise, I use Biogroom puppy shampoo on her which is mild. If you want a mild solution, you can bathe the dog as usual and finish her off by pouring a solution made with 1 part apple cider vinegar to 2 parts water. Pour over the coat (careful of the eyes) and then just let her dry. The smell will dissipate when the dog is dry. ACV can help with the itchies, I've found. Good luck!

| I think my new puppy might have this. He has it in his ears, on his chest and back. He has been tested for mites (negative) and we are now waiting for a ringworm test to be sure. But when I told the vet what I thought it was they looked at me like I was crazy. It looks EXACTLY like my dd's head. She still gets cradle cap and she is 7. I am praying it is not ringworm - yuck. But the darn test takes 2 weeks to get back and in the meantime we have been having the kids scrub like crazy just in case!! |

| Looks like it may take awhile to clear up I see improvement in his skin, but don't know if he is getting any new spots. Thanks! Your comments are very helpful! BTW, I use tea tree oil as an antibacterial and not too much because it's drying. For now I'm just using the vets shampoo. I just wish I knew the cause or preventive measure. It seems that he gets this every summer. At first I thought it was because Tokyo was so polluted but now we're here in the states and it's not as polluted here as there. Laura B. I hope your baby doesn't have ring worm!! If your kids use an antibacterial soap they should be fine. I'm pretty sure ring worm is caused by the same bacteria which causes athelete's foot.

I would bath in the murphy's oil soap yep the floor cleaner from neck down as jean dodds had me do that for dd and all the crusties were gone immediately --she said wash for 10 minutes the soap in then rinse real well -- dd reacted as it has citronella in it but if dog does not have allergies worth a shot -it is sebaceous gland excretion and it is an oily presents on the skin ring worm usually shows up in a black light they put over the dog and is round usually | |

My Marcel had it on his head in November - he caught it from his old vet, who had ringworm herself. The weird thing about canine ringworm is that there may not be a ring at all (like the obvious one in humans) - it may just be a patchy spot of hairloss, and sometimes some graying of the skin in that area. Marcel was treated w/ 6 weeks of oral Diflucan (compounded) and weekly anti-fungal baths (miconazole shampoo). Btw, if the skin turns gray, it can take quite a long time for that to resolve.

| Scaly Flaky Skin My dog also has the scaly, flaky skin. No open sores. This seemed to appear after we turned the furnace on. We also have dry skin right now. I usually use the oatmeal shampoo and conditioner. I am currently using the Happy Jack Itch No More shampoo. It contains refined tar solution, sulfer, salcylic acid and coat conditioners. Also applying Nutri-Vet Cool Skin for added relief. She seems to not be scratching as much, but still flaking. Any suggestions on supplements such as fish oils on her food or along these lines? |
