| Expressed anal glands for the first time, help... Mollie has been scooting on her rear and whimpering today, so I thought maybe it was her anal glands that needed to be expressed, since her last groom six weeks ago was a horrid groomer, I doubt that she did it even though I told her to. So anyway, I watched a video, put her in the sink, took a deep breath and did it. At first liquid brown stuff came out, just like in the video, but then I expressed them again, and it was more mealy like. The only way I know to describe it, is it was like if you had a big zit and popped it, and thick stuff came out, except of course this was brown. I was totally grossed out, but Mollie was a trooper, but how do I know if I got all of the gunk out? Is it a problem if you don't completely empty them out? And what was the brown mealy looking stuff. Ewwwww, I'm such a weanie, this was really bad, but necessary I know. I've had Yorkies for 15 years, this is the first time I've ever done this, I always left it to the groomer and never had one scoot around. Egads, I'm 59 years old, and I adore Mollie, why am I about to gag here?? Thanks for any help you can offer, I was clueless as to what I was doing. I put fingers in 5 and 7 o'clock position under her anus and squeezed. Still shuddering.... |

| you're my hero for even attempting that. but i don't think you need to express them completely...as long as she isn't constipated? |

| Ewwww. I feel sorry for you! I have no clue. I've never had to do it with Zoe - one of the reasons I like feeding raw - usually you don't have to do that. |

| You did fine. Don't worry about whether or not you got it all...she's going to be more comfortable, like immediately! (It sounds like you did get it all, though. ) Better to be gentle...you don't want to aggravate her glands. If she starts scooting her butt, you can always do it again. Gently. I know it sounds gross, but think of it as a tender milking of those loaded little glands. With one of my dogs, I actually had to do it every couple of weeks. After you've done it a few times, it won't bother you at all. And she'll be SO grateful! You can never trust a groomer to do it as carefully as you will. Bravo to you!

| BTW, just to be clear, for those who haven't done it... You don't actually squeeze the glands themselves...you get in back of them (if they're full, they feel like little marbles) put your thumb and forefinger together, and gently push forward toward the anus...as I said, like milking. Sorry...I just can't think of a better way to put it, lol... Once you've done it, you'll wonder why you ever worried about it. It's that easy. And it's a huge relief to your little one....

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey had this problem as a pup, and the vet said that some dogs don't push hard enough when they poop to empty the glands. The glands hold a "special" scent and a small amount of this suppose to go on top of each bowel movement. This tells other dogs who they are, and what they've eaten. Now if a dog can't push it out, it builds up and can even become impacted. Groomers use to regularly express glands, but if not done correctly you can push the contents further up, and this can lead to a serious infection. Also, if done when a dog doesn't need it done, some say it will lead to a dog losing the ability to express it on its own. The first time they were expressed at the vet's office, there was a lot to come out, after that, doing it at home, there wasn't that much, but his scooting let me know something was troubling him. I don't know if he outgrew the problem or different food helped. We also have added ground flax seed and a few green beans to his diet, which could help with bulk, but he hasn't had any problems in over 1-½ years.
