| scared to get Rabies shot Our sweet little Matza is 4 months old and about 3.8 pounds. She recently had her third set of shots this last Thursday and the doc wanted us to bring her back on Saturday for her Rabies shot. I had read up on it before hand and got so scared I told the doc we're gonna to wait a bit before we get it. She said she won't lie, some Yorkies and other breeds have had adverse reactions to this shot.......we are so worried, what if she gets it and has a terrible reaction? she's so small, should we wait till she 6 months or beyond? The vet said she just doesn't want us to wait till she's a year. Anyone out there had their puppy get the rabies shot? good reaction? bad reaction?....please let us know....we feel so distraught after reading about this vaccine. THANK YOU |

| Hey there! First of all, I'd like to welcome you to this community in which I joined a few days ago, and I must tell you it's a great place to be! About your baby, speaking from my personal experience, my little princess had her first rabies shot when she was 6 months and everything went nice and smooth, no reactions, no nothing, also, our doctor didn't even mention about any possible bad reactions, I mean, after all, It's for their own sake....Not sure what to say honestly, but if you are nervous about doing it now, you can also wait until 6 months or beyond, because, at 4 months she is still quite small. Hope this help. All our best wishes, Damandoree&Mab.

| Hi and welcome, Your concerns are valid so maybe talk to your vet a bit more to see when it would be appropriate. I don't remember when Duke got his rabies shot but it's around that if not 6 months. He was around the same weight as yours. He did not have any bad reactions, I always make sure that I'm free for atleast the rest of the day to spend with them after shots. Regardless of what shot you get, some dogs might have a reactions while others might not. I think that if you speak to your vet and monitor your pup afterward for changes then you'll be ok. I'm sure you know this but if you choose to wait to have the shot just don't have your pup near other dogs until all shots are completed. They are so small and we wouldn't want to risk any chances. Good luck.

| You can also talk to your vet about premedicating if you are worried. Laya gets a benadryl shot before all of her vaccines because she had a reaction to her DHPP when she was a pup.

| Another good thing to ask your vet about that I recently learned about is the 3 year rabbies vaccine. It's the same vaccine but more money. At least you don't have to go through the stress of the shot each year. I too keep putting off Bailey's rabbies shot...

YT 2000 Club Member | when my Jeter was 14 weeks old, he got his rabies shot and he was only a little over 1 pound. I voiced my concern about the shot and even called my local Dog Warden only to be told that in Ohio it is LAW that any cat dog or ferret 3 months and older be vaccinated! I was so scared that Jeter would get ill due to the shot, I broke out in hives! My vet gives Benadryl before any shots and he kept Jeter and i at the office for about 2 1/2 hours before he sent us home with instructions on what to do in case of an Emergency. Thankfully I only live one block over from our vet, so I felt safe taking him home. Jeter is now 21 months old and is still very small at only 2 1/2 pounds he just got his second rabies shot and doesn't have to get any more for another 3 years! Best of luck with your little one getting their shots! Ask for the Benadryl shot to be given before they give any vaccines too!

| OK, I understand where you are coming from. I also live in California. It is the law, the Rabies shot. You have to give it to them. Just to let you know. That is the one that is required by the state. not any ofthe others, however, the others are deadly in puppies , but the rabies can kill humans . My Suzi sis not have any problems getting the vaccine. It is best to make certain the vaccine is given without any other shot. If there would be any reaction it would be like a allergic one. You could request that you stay at the vet a few hrs after the vaccine is administered to make certain your pup is ok . Or you can request Benadryl is given beforehand. However the Benadryl will make your puppy more sleepy afterwards.

| I'm just as nervous as you about the rabies shot, and Apple is 8months old tomorrow, and I haven't gotten hers either...She's had all the DHPP shots....Why did your vet say not to wait until they're a year old? Is there an issue then, as compared to now? |
