| Vitamins We've been using a vitamin from the vet-Canine Whole Body Support /Standard Process-and am wondering if there might be another over-the-counter vitamin that would be just as good. Any suggestions?

| I'm not sure. The vet prescribed it for better general health. The pup has loads of allergies and is getting allergy shots but it was prescribed before we knew what his allergies were. He eats Natural Balance, Limited Ingredient Diet, Sweet Potato and Fish or Venison and gets Salmon Oil and Vit E too.

| Because commercial foods are already full of vitamins and minerals (as long as they are AAFCO approved and NB is), there is no reason to give more of what they are already getting. In fact, giving too many vitamins can throw off the balance in the food. Fish oil and vitamin E are okay but they are being used for good reason. I wouldn't give a multi vitamin at all honestly. If the food isn't meeting his needs, he should be on something else... If you feel like you have to give one, there are several available but I'm not sure one is much better than the next. Some YT'ers use Missing Link but then again that may not be too good for allergies, etc.

| Thank you. I also felt the food should have the right combination of vitamins. I'm giving the oils to help with itchies.

| There is a huge difference in the quality of vitamins available and the absorbability of those vitamins is dependent on how they are processed, otherwise they are just being literally peed right out of the body. Many vitamins out there are artificially produced. Look for a quality, reputable company such as Garden of Life or Nature's Way and you want to read how they are processed. The term "whole food" is indicative that the integrity of the food has been kept during the processing. And fermenting in the processing ensures the body will actually absorb the majority of the vitamins and minerals rather than immediately going to waste. Many of these whole food products have also used only certified organic products. We use Vitamineral Green (which is a whole food product available at Health Food stores). The girls each get about 1/16 of a tsp daily. This is a powered formula and a bottle last us a very long time. For quality products you almost always have to go to a health food store. Be prepared for a higher price tag as you are actually getting something for your money. And many studies have also shown that using an organic cold processed coconut oil has far superior health benefits than salmon oil.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I've always been told if kids/pets eat properly they should get all the vitamins and nutrients from whole foods. I actually got my daughter some whole food supplements from the nauture food store because they were shaped as teddy bears and made with real vegetables and fruit because the body absorbs it best from the actual food.

Just like vets, medical doctors get little training in nutrition. If you speak with a true nutritionist (master's level dietician) you will learn all about proper nutrition and food intake. I just had a really great session with such a nutritionist who suggested that for optimal health everyone should be using a whole food supplement, a probiotic, digestive enzymes prior to all meals and a quality cold pressed fish oil along with a healthy diet rich in whole grains, 5-7 servings of vegetables, 3-5 fruits with minimal lean protein from meat/fish sources and avoiding "white foods" such as sugar, flour and white rice.
