| Need a good low fat dry and wet food HELP!! My Trixie has just been diagnosed with pancreatitis. She was in the hospital from Friday til Sunday. The doctor said she need to eat a low fat diet. He gave me prescription diet Royal canin and Hills low fat to try. These are only sold in the vets office and are quite expensive. I want to give her wet food for now until she gets fully hydrated again then I want to switch to dry. I am planning to give all 3 this dry food. What wet and dry food do you recommend that I can use. I know wellness makes a low fat dry kibble but not a wet one. I found Nutro Natural Choice lamb with rice lite that is comparable to the prescription ones. Is this good food though?

| Please Google "Consumer Affairs Nutro." I would not feed it. For now I really would stick with what the vet gave you if she is doing well on it. It would be too easy to upset things if you switch foods. Natural Balance has some lower fat dry food but not sure on the wet. What % fat are you looking for?

| The prescription diet w/d has min 2.0% and max 4.0%. The Royal Canin LF has min 1.5% and max 3.0%. The Nutro I found has min 2.5% and max 4.5%

| I would NOT feed Nutro to anything! There are so many better foods out there. Go to a small pet food boutique/store and ask for recommendations. |

| Wellness Dog Food makes a "Healthy Weight" dry food that is lower fat and this might work. Wellness is now carried by Petco so you might find it slightly more affordable. This product was an editor's choice by the Whole Dog Journal in 2008 and it's a good quality food. They do have a website you can check out at WELLNESSŪ - Healthy Dog and Cat Food As an aside, my dog Barney had pancreatitis a few years ago -- was hospitalized and almost died after eating "gourmet" dog cookies. He never got pancreatitis again so just because your dog had it once does not mean your dog will get it again. We avoid giving him real fatty things and control his foods but he has never gotten it again. It is scary! |

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Ahh poor Trixie I feel so bad for her. Izzy also has pancreatitis/SIBO/IBD and we spent a fortune on vet bills since last November and tried many RX foods such as Scient Diet W/D, ID (but don't ever use the ID since that has pork in it and that put Izzy back in the hospital for 3 days after 3 weeks of being on the ID). She is now on the Purina EN (can) and Purina HA (kibble) I only give h er the EN in the am/pm so that I can put her supplements on it. She free feeds on the HA all day. She is also on Tylan powder for her SIBO/IBD. Trust me as much as I hated to put her on commercial food (she was fed freeze dried RAW - The Honest Kitchen) and nothing commercial..this is what is keeping her alive so I bit the bullet and did what I had to do for her. So far - so good. Keep us posted on Trixie please. Oh and 8 months of vets and foods she has been symptom free for 30 days now which is amazing.

| That's great for Izzy. Hope she does well and never gets this again. It is very scary. She is only a baby. Today she is back to her old self. Playing, eating, drinking an her own. It is great to see. It also cost me about 2500 dollars to get her well again. I just want to give her the best care and the best food that will not harm her. Right now she is on the Royal Canin LF can in the morning and Royan Canin LF dry in the evening. I have to bring he back to the hospital next week for a 1 wk check up I will be sure to interrigate the dr about what is best for my baby. I still cannot figure out what she got this from. I free feed them kibble. The kibble they have been on since I got them. They don't eat anything off of our table. I only wish I knew so it won't ever happen again. It was horrible to watch her so mushy. She never got diareah or vomited. She was just very very listless and had a pretty high fever.
