| Please Help Me. My Yorkie will not eat dog food! First off let me say i am huge animal lover. My yorkie named "Harley" was originally my sisters and i talked her into letting me take him after he was about two or three, and by that time he was pretty accustomed to eating people food and not dog food. I have had him about three years now and have tried and tried to find a dog food that he will eat, but every day i pour a bowl of dog food and it is still there that night untouched. The reason i need him to eat dog food is he has a severe allergy to something and the vet says that it is the people food. His entire back is raw from him biteing and scrating it. It really makes me cringe to even look at it. I have tried not feeding him people food for days at a time only to give back in. The reason i give in is because he does not touch the dog food. The only people food i give him is chicken from logans. I have tried all of the allergy free dog foods and he will not touch them. The other thing that i noticed is that it is extremely bad in the summer time and not that bad in the winter time. My question is, is there any people food that i can fix him on regular night to night basis that he will actually eat and not have an allergic reaction to. I know that ever dog is different, but i just spent a lot of money on every allergy free dog food at the local Pet Supplies store and he just looks at me like i am stupid when i try to get him to eat it. I know it my fault for ever letting it get to this point but i have tried and i really did not have any idea early on that food would do this to a yorkie. And maybe it is not the food. any help to this would be extremely appreciated. also i do treat him for fleas so that is not it. the other thing that i would try would be a dog food that he all dogs would eat because it is that good, if anybody knows of such a dog food. Thanks in advance for any help |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk! When you try to give him regular food do you mix it in with the human food? If not, maybe it would help to slowly transition him to the dog food... making a gravy for it and slowly getting him to go to plain dog food.. just a thought if you haven't tried it ~ good luck! My DH dog has sensitive skin/allergies.. he feeds him Verus.. the lamb and fish.. it stinks but really helps him.. all the yorkies eat it too. I tried giving them their own food but they always go to his..

| I really try to avoid mixing in extra things into dog food in order to get any dog to eat, since it can easily become an expected thing and create even more of a problem. I really recommend you just hold out. When you're dog is hungry, it will eat. If you're been feeding people food, your dog is going to want to hold out - he or she most likely realizes that if he/she does they will get it (at least in some minute form. Can you blame them? I think I would too...) If you "stand your ground" so to speak and feed only the kibble, your dog will eventually eat it. It may take a day (or maybe two depending on the habits) but he or she will eat when its clear that is all that will be made available. |
