| Bullystick reaction? I gave Zeus his first bullystick Wednesday and to say he loved it would be an understatement. He has since lost his appetite and has had loose stools. Could the bullystick be to blame? Nothing else has changed in his diet. Any one else experience this? |

| Was his bully stick treated (ie; smoked and very smelly)? If so, many furkids react to these chemicals and they can even get contaminated with bacteria while in the store as well. Stick to the natural bully's - though they can be difficult to find.

YT 1000 Club Member | also try to buy them wrapped them in plastic. that way you know that a mouse or something hasn't contaminated it in the store or during shipping.

| It wasn't treated and not smelly at all. It wasn't wrapped though. He is just very lethargic and refuses to eat. It must have been contaminated. |

| Another member's babies got really ill from bullies. It is also always best to let them chew for an hour or so and then take it away. In order to avoid any bacteria related infections from the act of chewing, once taken away - throw it out. Do not let them continue to gnaw at it for days as nasty stuff can accumulate.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | What brand was it? Any company can call their product a bully stick, and there is much variation between brands. Specifically, on the way they are dried. Most Bully Sticks use no artificial preservatives and the drying process is what safely preserves the tendon. However if a company skimps on this part, or doesn't thoroughly prepare the meat before drying, you could have a potentially unsafe product. Some brands use artificial preservatives, but these will have an "expiration date", and I wouldn't want to use one of those brands either. Many companies are importing dog products from China, and I'm still not convinced they take the precautions they should yet. I really like the Merrick brand, and they are USA made with no artificial preservatives, and come individually wrapped. They cost more than most, but they are so hard, that they last a long time, and they are a chewing stick, not really a food that they can eat. Joey takes a whole week to finish a stick and chews on them frequently. If your dog actually consumed the stick in one day, it may be the softer variety and the softer variety has more moisture, which means more bacteria.

| I also use the Merrick Brand Bully Stick called Twisties. I live in Calgary Canada and they are very difficult to find and once found are very expensive. My lil guys love them and also take about a week to finish one. Very good for cleaning teeth.........the breeder that I purchased 2 of my babes from is always so impressed with how clean their teeth are. |

I get mine on e-bay, but I don't know which companies ship to Canada. Funny, you mentioned your breeder, Joey's breeder said the same thing, and thought I must brush his teeth every day.

| Thanks, I will look for the Merrick brand next time I buy him a bullystick. I don't remember the name on the tag but it came from a pet store. He chewed on it for about an hour for two days and never made a dent in it. No pieces were ever eaten. It did get really gummy at the end, so I took it away and let it dry out. My poor baby is so pathetic right now. |

| Lesson learned. All bullysticks are not created equal. I was able to get him to eat some pumpkin and he finally urinated. I hope he is on the mend. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'm sure he'll be fine, healthy dogs are remarkably resilient when something like this happens, it's only dogs with a weakened immune system,, or suffering from some other health problem that don't recover quickly. Best of luck!

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | I don't remember where I read it, but bully sticks can cause diarrhea and should be given to dogs only under supervision.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Bully sticks shouldn't make the dog get diarrhea, if that happens take it away, for good! All chewing sticks say to only give under supervision because they all can cause a choking hazard. Some dogs that are gulpers, and don't really chew their food, and have been known to choke on bully sticks, rawhides, and greenies. So all chew sticks should be used with supervision. Bully sticks, unlike rawhides and greenies, are 100% digestible, however, so they won't cause an intestinal obstruction, since Greenies and rawhides are not 100% digestible, it is possible for them to cause an intestinal obstruction, especially in smaller dogs.
