| Urinary Tract Infection, Experience Greatly Welcomed! So, I posted a previous thread in the Training area about Lilly not using her pad. A few members told me she may have a UTI so I took her to the vet. He said she was running a small temp and that it could possibly mean the beginning of a UTI. He prescribed amoxicillan twice a day for 7 days. I started her on it yesterday afternoon and gave her 1 pill. Today I gave her one this morning and one earlier this afternoon. At first I was skeptical (even after going to the vet) if she even had a UTI. I had my mind set on her just not wanting to use the pad. I was upset because I was going to have to retrain her. However, I've started paying more attention to her potty behaviors. She has peed 3 times today and that's it. That's not like her, usually she's peeing constantly on her pad trying to get every little treat she can get. So, is this normal while experiencing a UTI in a dog? She hardly ever pees but when she does it's a HUGE amount and it's just wherever she's at, at that moment. She has NEVER peed on my couch and she has been peeing on my couch and our bed. It's almost as if she is scared to go because it hurts but then when she can't hold it anymore, she just lets it go not meaning to and no matter where she is at the time. I know this is long but I want someone experienced in UTIs to let me know if all of this sounds right? I'm concerned about my little princess!

| UTIs can be a funny thing. They can pee more (larger amount), pee smallerg amounts, pee in odd places, pee more often, have excessive thirst, have painful urination, etc. A dog with a UTI would probably pee more than 3 times a day unless they were really good at holding it and didn't want to go because of pain. If she is only going three times now, are you sure that she didn't have a problem all along and the antibios are kicking in now?

She's been doing this before she started her pills, I just wasn't paying as much attention to the number of times but now I am. She's always been a trooper holding her pee, she used to hardly ever have accidents when we would leave her home during the day. When she was a puppy and I had school, she would be left for like 8+ hours a day and she'd use her pad once. This just isn't like her now though, it's like everytime I catch her pottying somewhere she isn't supposed to, she just looks at me with sad eyes. This morning I had to wake up pretty early and I made her get down with me so she wouldn't potty on the bed. She followed me around then I went back in the bedroom to lay back down, she made it up on the bed before I did and AS SOON AS her feet hit the bed, she started peeing. She peed a HUGE spot and it went down the side of my new memory foam topper, new mattress and box springs. I was so upset but I felt bad for her too, I'm scared to get onto her if she can't help it. I don't know, I just wish I knew what it was. I'll just keep giving her the antibiotics and hope and pray we're not taken over by pee when this is all over with. Also, what would be a good thing to clean my mattress with? It was on the very edge, I have upholstery cleaner and I used it on it but it was hard to clean it and it still has a yellow tint to it. I don't want it smelling.

| From your threads it seems to me that your baby does have a UTI. When Snickers had one, he could not hold it for anything, he was peeing all over the place all the time. He would run to the door to let us know he had to go and would not make it. Then he also ended up peeing on our bed and thats when we noticed the blood. We took him immediately to the vet and started Calvamox and it cleared up in a day or 2. It was scary and my heart broke for my little boy. Have you noticed the color of her pee? Is it super dark with an irregular smell, these are signs as well. Good luck babe, I hope things go well and I hope the meds kick in soon in a positive way!! Snick & Viv

I'm just scared to death I'm going to have to retrain her and that she'll never feel better. Her pee is just REALLY strong smelling, it makes me gag. I haven't noticed any blood in it yet but the vet made it sound like I caught in the beginning stages. This morning I gave her the 4th pill out of the 14. I noticed she got off the couch a few minutes ago, sniffed around for a few, walked beside her pad then looked up at me, as if to say "I want some treats MOM!" Maybe that means it's starting to get out of her system and she'll be back to peeing on that darn pad in no time! I hope and pray, seriously. I won't know how to act going a day without cleaning pee off my couch or bed or floor.

| It takes about 36 hours before you can tell if an antibiotic is working. After that, if she is still symptomatic, check with your vet. He may want to try another antibiotic or do a sterile culture. UTI's usually respond to either Clavamox or Baytril so most vets will prescribe one of the two right away as cultures can take a week to grow. Most UTI's are caused by E-coli which is very resistant to antibiotics so sometimes it is necessary to do a culture. Lady had a UTI a few years ago that was stubborn to clear up. It turned out she needed Tetracyline in addition to Clavamox because she had two different strains of bacteria. |

| I have a little girl who gets a lot of UTI. She has a bladder that leaks urine and so she is more prone to getting infections. I can always tell when she has one because she will start having accidents on the carpet and bed. She normally is so good about using her pad. She usually stays on the medication for 2-3 weeks (this is because she has had so many). Then my vet usual takes another urine test at the end of the antibotics to see if it cleared up. I hope your little one feels better soon and don't worry as soon as the medication starts to work she should be using her pad again. |

I just don't want to take her back and seem overly worrisome and them get mad because I'm not giving it time, the vets up there always act like I'm stupid or that I worry too much anyway.

| I know it is hard but try not to worry. Even if she is still having some accidents it doesn't mean the medication isn't working. Her bladder might just be sensitive for a while the same if we get a UTI. Give it a few more days. |

| Oh haha, I thought your comment in #10 was to me, I goofed and didn't pay any attention. I bought those AZO strips before when I had a UTI myself and had to have them right away. I don't remember paying $10 but it probably was.
