| ? small dog vet I am in the process of looking for a new vet. My question is how do you find out if a vet is good with small dogs. What questions should I ask. I had to give up my prior vet when I moved and the vet I have now is a good vet, but not sure he is all that comfortable with small dogs. Any suggestions.

I would send her a mesg and she will let you know. There is a big difference in the treatment of larger dogs vs small dogs. Not all vets are trained for proper treatment with these little guys. You need to ask questions like, Do you use Iso or Sevoflurane, do you do a full blood panel prior to surgery, IV fluids, heart monitor, pain medication during and after surgery ask them if they know what a BILE ACID TEST does and Protein C. Also, my vet will not give all the shots at one time when we get the series of 3, he splits them up. Too much for these little guys to handle. Crystal, Ellie May, will help you with more and so will others. Just take note and everything will work fine and if you dont like the vet,go to another. Its your right...Good Luck | |

| Wylies Mom posted this, hope this will help you. How to choose a Veterinarian -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Choosing a Veterinarian is one of the most important factors in your pet's health. As with all professions, not all Vets are created equal - so it is important to choose a vet who meets your expectations in providing optimal health care for your pet. A few things to consider: *do they follow the most current vaccine protocol? *do they practice an appropriate and safe anesthetic protocol for yorkies? *do they offer the option of transport for a sick pet if the office isn't staffed 24/7? *where do they refer to for specialty cases? (a good Vet will have a referral network and should feel comfortable referring to specialists, when needed) Choosing a Veterinarian | The Humane Society of the United States How to Choose a Veterinarian | eHow.com Healthypet.com: How to Choose a Veterinarian Choosing a Vet: Pet Health: Petfinder Library AVMA: Veterinarian Overview {Thanks to Ellie May for providing these links! } |

| What I did was find a Yorkie breeder close to me through the YTCA website. Then I gave her a call, apologized for bothering her, but she said she was happy to help. I explained that I was looking to find a vet that was very experienced with Yorkies, as my old vet killed my Starr (first Yorkie) with his inexperience. She referred me to a great vet practice, and one vet in particular there who is her favorite, and he has owned Yorkies himself. He is terrific, and doesn't "manhandle" my girls like my old vet used to, he's sweet to them and gentle, and knowledgeable. Expensive, but I trust him, and he's on call 24/7/365, so no more dealing with ER vets! Good luck!!!!
