| I have been doing some reading on this subject myself and have found some very disturbing info.....We have gotten to a very complacent about using these types of products thinking they're safe or "they" would never allow a product on the market if it wasn't...That is so far from the truth......... Our pets are doused on a monthly basis with toxic poisons from too many vaccines, fleas chemicals and heartworm chemicals it's no wonder they are dying from cancer at an alarming rate. The chances of a pet dying from cancer is about 46% not to mention the undiagnosed thyroid problems and the liver and kidneys are also being damaged at a rapidly rising rate. And then when we take our pets to the vet and ask how could this happen they say these products have nothing to do with it....hmmmm...... This was one of the most disturbing things I came across....We have NO idea all the chemicals we are exposing our pets to because it's considered a "trade secret" by the companies to tell us what the "inert" ingredient actually are. ....... "Pesticide products are made up of more than one chemical. Most pesticides are composed of "active" ingredient(s) , whose identity must be listed on the label, and "inert" ingredients whose identities most manufacturers claim are trade secrets. The term "inert" is misleading, because these secret ingredients are neither biologically, chemically, nor toxicologically inactive. Much of the testing required for EPA registration is done on the active ingredient only. Therefore, adverse effects of the pesticide as it is used are untested and unknown. Inert ingredients need not be listed on the product inserts and are subject to less testing than the "active" ing. and are generally tested in short term studies for acute toxicity only. In actuality, many "inert" ing. used in pesticides are as toxic, or more toxic, than the registered "active" ing. Of course, not all dogs exhibit immediately noticeable symptoms when dosed with a commercial spot-on flea product. Adult animals and those in peak of health are less likely to show immediate signs compared to animals that are young, old, or suffering from chronic disease. Animals with a heightened sensitivity to chemicals or with exposures from multiple sources such as a flea collar; other dips, sprays, dust, or flea bombs; yard pesticides; and house termite extermination, are most likely to react. The cumulative and synergisticimpacts of pesticides can take a heavy toll on animals. Dr. Jerry Blondell, of the US EPA Office of Pesticides, has indicated clearly “not to use pesticides on the old, the sick, or the young.” While some of the literature for the spot-on products does discourage this usage, many dog guardians and veterinarians overlook or disregard these written precautions. Although the number of dogs reported to react to these products may seem small, this does not suggest the overall impact is small. First, spot-on products are relatively new, and many problems are cumulative. Second, reactivity to chemicals in a population is similar to other population statistics and is represented by a bell-shaped curve. In other words, at one end of the spectrum are sensitive individuals, and at the opposite end are resistant individuals; these groups are relatively small compared to the vast middle group, who show varying degrees of susceptibility – but who are all susceptible. Thus the sensitive group – dogs who have displayed signs of toxicity – happen to be the sentinels for the younger, healthier ones who will eventually be affected; it’s just a matter of time. Despite advertising claims to the contrary, both over-the-counter and vet. prescribed fleakilling topical treatments are pesticides that enter our dogs' internal organs (liver, kidneys), move into their intestinal tracts, and are eventually eliminated in their feces and urine. Humans and other animals who interact with these chemically treated pets can be affected by the toxins too."

Donating YT Addict | It's ashame that it has to come to this. I don't like putting Advantix or Frontline on Tyke, but where I live it seems that natural things do not work at all against fleas. I've already had an attack so to speak in April on fleas and it took spraying the yard, my house, and Tyke treated to get them under control. I hate fleas and where we live they are awful. I also wish they would come out with something that would repel the fleas and there wasn't a chance of harming the dog.

| In reference to the quote posted... how would you know if your pup is affected by the on the spot treatment? Scruffs gets "depressed" so to speak after we put the medicine on. He won't come near us and acts very distant. I don't know if this happens because the wetness/oil dripping bothers him or if there is a different problem. |
