| Yorkies more health problems then other breeds? not that this will have any effective on my decision to get my yorkie but i may need to be prepared. i have heard from many yorkie owners i know and others i have seen in home as i am a visiting nurse ,that their yorkies have been the sickest dogs they ever owned. the lady i saw today had a yorkie 11 ys old said she has spent thousands of dollars on vet bills and that they usually need their teeth pulled for many reasons other than soft and rotting .she just got her yorkie fixed as she had a uterus infection that almost killed her and she never had pups. now her dog is 11 pounds was 4.5 pounds 3 months ago .does spading make them gain that much weight? i had a poodle for 20 years other than shots i had only one other problem she had to see a vet for. please prepare me!!!! | Well i think you may hear that Yorkies are sick more often because they are in high demand right now and many "breeders" are not responsible when they breed and their pups end up sick. If you buy your dog from a reputable breeder they will be no more prone to problems than any other dogs. Labs have hips, Cockers have eyes and skin- every dog has their issues and even if you DO get from a reputable breeder- they still may have some issues- Layla came from a great breeder and she has pancreatitis- nothing to do with breeding- just luck of the draw. Do your research and buy from good breeder who does genetic testing. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | There are genetic issues and other health issue in every breed out there. I don't think yorkies are any more afflicted than others.

The Yorkie wouldn't have gotten a uterine infection if she would've been spayed. The same goes for all other breeds. If their teeth are brushed and they have dentals when needed, most won't have major issues. Yorkies do have tons of teeth issues but you just have to keep up with dentistry.

My furkids Donating Member | As in ANY pedigree dog, you are going to find some kind of an issue...either it be their knees, hips breathing...etc....I don't want to jinx myself (so we will pretend I didn't really say this!!) I have a 4 yr old and soon to be 3 yr old...I have NEVER had any sort of health issue with either one of them. I had both my girls spayed in Jan and haven't noticed any weight gain. Having them spayed early (wish I hadn't waited) will help to prevent and uterine and/or mammary issues.

| about Yorkies My first yorkie was 3wks short of 15 yrs. when I lost her from kidney's. I had a Westie that got a uterine infection and had to have emergency surgery on Thanksgiving Day, that was a long while ago, but because I didn't let her have a litter, and I hadn't spay her she got the infection. It was my first dog and I had her Mother, but I didn't know this could happen, now I am very well aware of it. My yorkie was spayed at 7months she is 21months old and havn't had any problems, she is a very healthy, happy little girl. |

| I have had 3 yorkies in the past 30 years. I was very lucky with my first 2 as they lived very healthy long lives. My newest one is 9 months old and so far nothing major. Good luck with your future furbaby. |

| Brush daily and have your vet look at the teeth every year or twice a year during check-ups to see if he/she needs a dental. Using a product like OraVet wouldn't hurt either. Don't let retained baby teeth stay for too long. If the vet wants to pull them, get it done.
