I'll go with my vet and her "BS" on this one. Stopping in November is based on a lack of understanding about the lifecycle and meds commonly used. Skipping doses can lead to certain larvae stages not being eliminated.

The last link is another person (who is not a vet) who is complaining about the following: The heartworm industry authority, The American Heartworm Society (and their cat heartworm site) offers a wealth of information. Their website is a public service but also a marketing tool aimed at buyers and resellers of heartworm meds. Yet, she herself is making a living touting all of her "facts". Here is her shopping area on her site: Shopping Cart for Scared Poopless and Nutrition Recordings Definition of a hypocrit. And, she is not the only one....most of the holistic sites are selling products.

| Instead of choosing people to attack based on their supposed lack of credibility, why don't you attack the actual facts? Statements like "Ohmygod, this is so false," or "That is simply not true!" etc, simply don't fly in the face of SCIENTIFIC FACT. Nor does "I've been giving my dog her heartworm medicine once a month and she never got heartworms" qualifies as a logical conclusion that you're following the optimal regimen for heartwarm control. Here is the research paper on heartworm disease. Read it and feel free to post here if you have any questions. Last edited by BrooklynBlues; 03-08-2014 at 07:32 PM. |

I know what the scientific facts are and I am not going to sit and debate with you based upon a few people's written thoughts. I will continue to provide my pets with heartworm preventatives...I have sadly seen dogs die because of people like you who refuse to listen to the real facts. One of them was a foster of a friend and she suffered needlessly because someone did not use prevention.....horrible. I have also seen the vast numbers of dogs go through the horrible treatment to kill heartworms. Not going to happen to my beloved pets. Conspiracy theories are of no interest to me.

Heartworm disease is a real threat. But in this country it's managed by overpoisoning dogs. If you choose to do that with your pet, just remember that you are responsible for it. | ||

| Correct: Heartworm infection prevention does not exist. The drugs are actually a cure. However, it does prevent a case of full blown heartworm disease. I would rather use the heartworm cure pills (if that is what you prefer to call them) to kill L3 and L4 than wait until they turn into L5's. If one wants to wait until worms are reproducing in their dog's chest, fine. I will not and I will not do that to my dogs.

| False and wrong. Before replying just for the sake of saying something, you would greatly benefit from reading the actual research paper, Clinical Techniques in Small Animal Practice, linked above. If you are unable to comprehend a 6-page research paper, you are not qualified to comment on the issue, or any scientific issue, for that matter. |
