Hello everyone!

Anyone feed they're fur baby Royal Canin for Yorkies? If so how does your fur baby like it?

I'm currently feeding Paco Eukanuba for Yorkies, but his fur is very dull, and his skin is dry and sometimes itchy. I've heard great things about Royal Canin, and was just wondering what current users think of the product?

I fed it a few years ago and they liked it, unfortunately it contains grains and made Reese itchy.

Some dogs are allergic to corn and it can cause skin itchiness to those with a problem. Be sure and find a food with no corn if you are switching. Joey uses Royal Canin, it does contain corn though, and I've tried other foods, the last one caused extreme brown eye drainage, so we are back to RC. While many dogs do well on a certain food, there's always the exception. Another cause for skin itchiness, is not rinsing thoroughly, be sure to really rinse well after shampooing and always use a good conditioner as it conditions the skin as well as the hair.

I feed Ben Royal Canine, and he loves it. He has been on it for about 3 or 4 months and I have not seen him react to it in any way. I used to feed him Eukanuba because that is what the breeder was feeding him, but he just stopped eating it, so that is when I tried out RC and it has been good for him so far.

Sadie is eating Joey's RC Hepatic 14 prescription kibble because she refuses to eat her own kibble. SHe is doing a lot of paw licking, a new habit. Could that be allergies? The liver support group recommended I feed her NB Vegetarian so if Joey accidentally eats it, it won't be so bad for him. Has anyone tried that? Supposed to be good for allergies?

Paw licking can indicate a food allergy.
Ellie was on this exact food and got terribly itchy.

I just brought my dog some R.C. I have'nt switched him over yet bc he is sick. As soon as he gets better I'm going to start giving it to him. The vet recommended it.

I have read of paw licking being a sign of allergies. Do you have to free feed? When I'm taking care of my son's dog, I always make each of the sit before I place the bowls down. I don't allow them to touch the others bowl. If you have to free feed that causes a problem, but it sounds like Sadie needs a kibble she likes better.

Sophie is still on the Puppy 33 or the Inside Puppy 27. She's not yet graduated to the "for Yorkshire Terrier" until she's 10 months old. She likes it, but then I've never given her anything else. I also slice off some Pet Botanics Organic Chicken and Brown Rice. She loves the two together. Sophie has itchy problems too and I wondered if it was the RC cause I know it contains the corn. I'm afraid to switch though as I don't want to go through the upset tummy/poopy problems...

I am so pathetic at this feeding thing. I tried not to free feed and I was trying to referee between the two dogs' bowls and it was causing a lot stress for me and the dogs. They also refused to eat in separate rooms. I live in a condo, so I can't allow them to "bark it out." I just went back to free feeding and I think Sadie might be having a problem with the RC. She used to love her California Natural before I found out Joey was sick and had to change his diet.

I think free feeding is best, but when dogs have to be on different diets, it can cause some difficulty. Many dog trainers say that making a dog do something before it is given food establishes your role as the leader. Sitting before you place the food down is relatively easy to teach; you just keep picking up the bowl, if they go after it, before the release command is given. Usually they catch on pretty fast. I had to do this with Joey because he became slightly food aggressive when a new dog was in the house, and barked his head off when food was given. By making both dogs sit and stay, before I placed the food down ended his anxiety for some reason. You basically just have them sit and stay, and place the food on the floor with your palms facing them you say "stay". Then you pick up the food if they move an inch, you just keep repeating this until they stay. I only wait a couple of seconds and then I give a release command, such as "OK." They finish the food rather quickly, but if one goes to the others food, I just pick him up and put him back by his bowl. The bowls are set close together. I guess they learn that you are in charge of the food, and you are the leader, not them, so they don't feel like they have to fight it out for pack leader.

You can also try sprinkling a little Parmesan cheese on both their foods, so they think they are getting the same thing. Dogs will sometimes eat kibble they normally won't eat, if Parmesan cheese is on it.

Did the vet recommend it while the exam room was covered in Royal canin products and ads? My orignal vet from Banfield (inside petsmart) recommended royal canin, gee i wonder why they pay him to say that. It's pricey and yes has corn in it. Uni kinda liked it, then grew tired of it. I had to mix it in with canned, which was a big mess. I switched over to Science Diet "Nature's best" lamb and rice small bites. No corn, Uni loves it, no more mixing with canned food, no more messy face/beard.

Royal canin is too exxpensive i think $20+ per 3 lb bag!

Paco is currently on Eukanuba for Yorkies because that's what the breeder fed him. He eats it because its there but its not like he looks forward or enjoys eating it. That's why I was considering switching him to RC.
