Donating YT 11K Club Member | Teddy & London's vet results...some questions.. Whew! What a long day! Ok so i finally was able to get them an appt for today because Teddy had been peeing blood, and still is. I took the pee sample along with stool samples for both and they need to call me for the results. My question is..she said it can either be a urinary infection or stones, but should i wait for the results before deciding to get x-rays? If they are stones what can be done?? Omg Teddy also has conjuntivitis in his left eye and an ear infection! I noticed his eye was red around the eye so i've been cleaning it with warm water and a cloth everyday and the mucus stopped coming out but i knew it had to be something. I had a list of questions for the vet! Also his ears have been smelling a bit but he hasnt been scratching or anything but she said he had a little infection. So they plucked his ear hairs because she said he had a lot and that can be a reason and gave me medicine. Also when they plucked his ears the lady said he expressed his anal glands on his own because he was so nervous, and when she handed him to me he smelled so bad! Is this normal? He also kep peeing a lot after that, and red pee too, i think from being nervous. When she saw his pee she got me Clavamox to take home. She said London's heart and lungs sound great, also Teddy's. But London will need surgery later on to correct her umbilical hernia. Oh and i asked about London's dry skin and she said i shouldn't bathe her more than twice a month...is this true? One more question...they both had a bit of diarrhea today but not usually. So she told me i should get this medicine called metronidazole...do you think this is necessary? She said it is to help with the diarrea but this morning is the only time they had it, usually they have firm poopy. It's been a long day today and $400 later we may still need to get xrays and surgery, these dogs sure aren't cheap lol But i love them! Can someone please help me out with any of these questions...Thanks!

| Hmm, well-- I'll try to help where I can! If it were my dog, I'd wait for the urinalysis results before jumping to xrays. Since your little boy is still urinating, even if it is a stone, it isn't causing an obstruction yet, so you should have time to get back the results on a urinalysis. To be honest, I'm a little surprised that they didn't just run the test right there and give you the results-- a standard urinalysis with a dip stick and spun-down sediment takes all of ten minutes to prepare and read, and that would be sufficient to tell them if there was an infection going on. The anal gland smell-- yes, it is always horrible. He may have some of the fluid in his fur if they didn't tidy him up after he expressed his glands, but it can be washed out. Clavamox can sometimes cause diarrhea in some dogs, as can stress... did the diarrhea start before or after the vet visit? Metronidazole is another antibiotic, and is pretty good against a variety of bugs that could possibly cause diarrhea, but it seems premature to me to jump to Metronidazole when a dog has had only one bout of diarrhea. I'd run a stool sample and let the dogs relax before throwing more drugs at them. On the topic of bathing-- baths alone do not cause dry skin. If you're using a shampoo that is harsh, it can contribute to the problem, but the real root of the issue is more likely to be dietary. I like oatmeal-based shampoos. You can add fish oils to the diet as a natural way to improve the condition of your dogs' coats-- the ones sold in little capsules for human use are just fine, and can really help with dry skin.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Sorry to hear about your babies. When Cali had a UTI they told me right away on the urine sample and started her on meds. Hopefully you will getthe results soon and not have to go the Xray route if it's and infection. When they express the anal glands the smell is overwhelming. He may be peeing due to the infection. I bathe mine every 2 weeks as they don't really go out much and I don't want to dry out their skin. If they only had diahrrea today you may want to hold off on giving them the metrodrozinol. I have it on hand and if mine get tummy upsets I give it them. Hope Teddy feels better soon.

| You have already gotten some great advise but I wanted to add my concerns for your Teddy -- I know that must be frightening. I would think with an eye and ear infection, it might be even more a chance the blood in urine is a case of infection vice stones. But they can tell a lot from the urine tests. I am surprised they did not tell about infection right away, but they may be sending it all off for a more in depth analysis. One of my puppies got a little eye infection. The vet gave me Tobramycin, Ophthalmic solution -- worked like a charm. By the second day it was gone but I had to continue the drops for 7-10 days. I have never seen one express their own glands when scared but tensing up could do it, I guess. And it really does smell bad! I would be reluctant to give medicine for diarrhea after only one time of a loose stool. Mostly because once you give diarrhea meds, it sometimes makes them the other way, constipated. Best wishes -- hope it is a simple infection that can be cleared right up with some good antibiotics.

| Hopefully the Vlacamox will take care of Teddy's problems quickly. Metronidazole is used when there are parasites, so unless the diarrhea continues and/or febal camples come back positive, I'd skip it. Sending hugs to all.....

| I just wanted to say- hope Teddy feels better! Don't have much experience with what's bothering him, but good luck! It seems like you've gotten some good advice.

Donating YT 11K Club Member | So the vet just called and she said it is a UTI. She's so nice and helpful. She said the clavamox should help, to finish it up for the 14 days and if it doesn't then she will prescribe another antibiotic. Their fecal samples came out negative so i guess i will not be getting the metronidizal and today their poop looks normal. She said just to feed a bland diet or rice and chicken for a week.

You may need to redose. Wondering why they didn't give you liquid because it is easier...

| When Snick had a UTI and I had to administer that fairly large Clavamox pill, the easiest way to get it down was to wrap it in string cheese. Snickers LOVES it, so that was the only thing that worked. Also, before I found that sneaky trick, I would smash up the pill and mix it into peannut butter and then take my finger and put it on the roof of his mouth. He loved that as well but it was so much mroe messy. So sorry your babies are not feeling well, hope it all clears up soon! He may have vomitted it up b/c it just went down wrong. Good Luck babe!

| The Clavamox liquid is super easy. Maybe they can swap you out. The Clavamox does tend to upset the tummy (as do most antibiotics) so following with a probiotic (two hours after the antibiotic) is always a good idea. Poor kiddos! Girl, you have been through too much lately! You need a vacation!
