Default Mia had her Bordetella and is now coughing????

Ok, I took my sweet happy healthy baby to the vet on April 27th to get her bordetella because the July long weekend she will be going to a kennel while I'm on holidays. On May 3rd at bedtime when we cuddled up for the night she starting "coughing up a furball" as my husband put it. Nothing ever came out and she eventually calmed down while I lightly rubbed her neck. Two nights later she started coughing again, this time until a glob of a yukky egg white texture clear goo came up. Needless to say, I researched it and it sounds just like kennel cough. She just had another episode now.
My question is..... can the vaccine give the symptons? Can she get if she's had the vaccine? What is done for Kennel cough? I called her vet and they told me to bring her in tommorrow morning, but I just shelled out big bucks last week for all her shots and heart worm and the bordetella and if its not neccessary to go back, I'd like to save a trip. (of course I WILL take her if neccessary)

I am not sure if you can get Kennel Cough from the shot.
Mia did have Kennel Cough when i brought her home from a byb. It was a horrible cough. I was so scared. I spent 260.00 for tests CBC, fecal test, and 2 others. We ended up getting antibiotics and a cough syrup. It took weeks to clear up. I hope this is not what your dog has. It can be expensive, and it is hard to watch them suffer. I hope it is just allergies or something easy.

I will keep you in my prayers. Please keep us posted on how it goes. Best of Luck.

Did they give a shot or the nose spray? I have requested mine always to get the shot. Everytime they had the nose spray there were reactions to it. Lexi just got hers Tuesday and I made sure they gave the shot. She did fine. Poor baby. I know its so hard when they are sick or have a reaction to something. Hope it gets better.

Yes they can get it from the vaccination and often in Yorkies that's what happens. Yes they can also get a different strain that might go around than the one covered by the bordetella. It is a virus and just as in human flus you can get a different type even if you had your flu shot.
Yes, it can sometimes be dangerous if a secondary infection happens.
Treatment for kennel cough, I usually just do vicks vaporub steams three times a day. A little cough medicine BEnelyn, will help too.
Your Vet should perhaps listen to the chest and lungs to be sure it isn't going into pneumonia.
Unfortunately boarding kennels require this. Too bad you don't know someone that can take your Yorkie when you are away instead of a boarding kennel.
Also, from what you said of what you all had done, that was a little too much at once for a little yorkie. It would have been better if you could do the other vacc's a few weeks before, do heartworm a week or so later, then bordetella. Doing everything at once is pretty hard on the immune system in one go, I don't recommend doing that if possible.

Yesz they can get kennel cough from the vaccination. Vets usually prescribe an antibiotic for it so it doesnt turn into pneumonia

Bordetella is not a shot it's liquid put up their nose. I only got it for our dog because our groomer shows her dogs and Bordetella is airborne.

I have shown my dogs for about 15 years and have never picked it up from a show. The twice that a couple of my dogs had it, years ago now, was when I used to walk them out in parks and streets where other pets were walked.
Since I haven't done that anymore, never had a problem with it or with fleas.
It is airborn, technically, a dog can pick it up anywhere.
It is around where ever you do. Usually, however, a dog will actually be affected with it or come down with it, if the immune system is down for any reason. Stress can do that and is a reason why it was dubbed 'kennel cough' in the first place. Dogs taken from their home environment, placed in a kennel, unfamiliar surroundings and routine, stress levels go up, immune system isn't as strong and potentially they can come down with kennel cough.
I can see the point of boarding kennels requiring it, however, it is also unfortunate that Yorkies don't take the protection well.
As I understand it, there is now a vaccine OR the spray up the nose. The vaccine is supposed to be a bit better for Yorkies they don't have as bad a reaction as the spray up the nose seems to do.
However, I still don't recommend doing a bunch of stuff at once, ie reg. vacc's, rabies, bordetella, heart worm. Space them over a number of weeks if you have to do them.

I'd rather do the shot I felt bad for my little girl, she must have felt like she was drowning.

Yes, they can get it from the vaccine.
And to the original poster, it sounds like that's what happened.

Bella came down with Kennel Cough about 24 hours after she got the bordetella (nasel). Bella's started out with allot of sneezing and then the cough. We did contact the vet and she put her on antibotics right away. The vet said, she would give the shot the next time.

Thanks everyone for the responses.
Yes, she had the spray up the nose and did not like it at all!!! And yes we spread out the vacines and bordetella over two weeks (and her heartworm starts next month) but I paid all at once so I was not looking forward to another trip to the vet. It's funny that when I called to ask if this could be a reaction to the bordetella they said no... I would have hoped they knew more about Yorkies and could have suggested the shot instead... sigh. So far there has only been three episodes and the last one was only for less than thirty seconds, so I'm going to keep a super close watch on her and if I hear any signs of respitory problems get her straight to the vet. Until then I hope its just a mild reaction to the bordetella and again.... thank you all for the responses!
