| Urinary incontinence Hi, Does anyone have a yorkie that has this prroblem? My 10-yr. old spayed female has just started this (only when she sleeps). I tried Proin and she could not tolerate it. I have heard there may be other products that could help this problem, does anyone know of any? Isabella10 |

♥Tiny Tia my Furbaby♥ Donating Member | Is her weight o.k? Just that the vet told me to watch Tias weight now she has been spayed as urinary problems could occur.

| Yes! This started with Chloe not long after she was spayed. I stayed up one night just to watch her and make sure it was incontinence as opposed to accidents in the bed. She's 4 lbs and petite. I was so scared to put her on any meds so I bought disposable diapers for her (she sleeps in our bed) and we have not had any problems with leaks or anything. It works well and I just make sure to wash her bum really well every morning so there's little risk of skin breakdown. She only "leaks" the smallest little amounts into her diaper (about a quarter size circle).

| My yorkie Isabella is the perfect weight for her frame. I used to have her sleep in my bed but when this urinary thing started, I took her to the vet and she was treated for a urinary tract infection ana was on 2 rounds of antibiotics for a total of 10 days, when that did not work, they did an x-ray of her bladder and it showed no signs of stones but to be absolutely sure they did an utrasound. The ultrasound showed what the vet referred to as maybe a little calcification on the kidneys, so they did a calcium index and all is fine. I decided against diapers because I did not want her to get a rash or burn so I made the decision to use wee wee pads on top of her mattress in her crate and that has worked out fine. My Norwich terrier lays beside her and they both sleep peacefully. I may check out homeopathic alternatives but for the time being I will continue with the pads. |

| What kind of side effects did she have from the Proin? There's another hormone drug, diethylstilbestrol (DES), you could possibly try. Ask your vet if its an option for her. |

| Hi, Isabella threw up in her crate and then had the scariest bowel movement for several hours; it was soupy and very bloody and I was scared to death. I called the vet and we immediately took her off it. DES was mentioned by my neightbor who is a vet tech. I am going to the vet tomorrow with my Norwich so I will inquire about it. Thank you for mentioning DES, I could not remember what my neighbor called it. |

| Just for thought, doctors have now determined that when animals and humans have a hysterectomy and oophrectomy( spaying), there are side effects that occur both in the short and long term. Lack of the hormones that are produced by the ovaries, cause a cascade of issues, urinary incontinence is but one of them. Not to mention calcium absorbtion issues, which may effect her teeth, and cardiovascular issues as well. Effects such as these occur all the time in post-hysterectomy women, unfortunately, as I know of these on a personnal basis! So to follow the logical conclusion: these issues should also happen in female animals where this procedure is practiced. Just a thought into the mix............ By the way, just hope all goes well this morning at the vet, especially after her gastro issues this morning. Last edited by lil fu fu girl; 05-08-2009 at 05:17 AM. |
