| NEED HELP, don't know what to do! We have a 1 year old yorkie who will not eat. He has been on Evo chicken for about 6 months and would only eat if we put ID in it. Now he won't eat that. He will eat the ID pieces (canned) and put the EVo in his mouth and drop it on the floor. The only time he will eat is if we put the dry food in our hands. I am not hand feeding him the rest of his life. Now we have switched to Before Grain Buffalo by Merrick. He is showing no interest in his food. I do not want to keep feeding him canned because it is expensive, the food is going bad fast, and the vet said it is not good for him he should be having all hard food except for maybe canned one time a week, not everyday. Any ideas on how to get him excited for food or to at least eat? |

| Have you tried putting some chicken broth in it or cottage cheese? Sometimes I put it my my dogs dry food just to dress it up. I have also put plain yogurt in it too. Good luck.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | dogs aren't going to starve themselves. he will eat eventually. what you can do if schedule feed him for a few days. Give him the meal for 15 minutes. whatever he doesn't eat, pick up and do not offer him food again till the next feeding time. at the next feeding time offer his meal again for 15 minutes. if he eats, great, if not, pick it up again and he doesn't get anything till breakfast. Not eating for a day is fine and normal. mine free feeds and eats whenever she wants. sometimes she eats her meal right when i put it down, and sometimes she's not interested and won't eat. its completely normal for dogs to do this. and since he's 1 year old you do not need to worry about him skipping a few meals. it won't hurt him.

| I had always left dry food out all the time and then given canned food once a day. But little by little they were not eating as much of the dry, and Ben started to get a tartar buildup, so I decided to put them on all dry food. At first they rebelled and were not eating. I coerced a little with the hand feeding but I was not going to do that forever either. Eventually, they will eat it. I did take a spoon of canned and sort of wipe it around the dry, not really giving them enough to eat, but spreading the flavor of the canned but I only did that for a couple of days. They are not going to starve themselves just because they don't like the dry as much as the canned. They may try to hold out, but they will eventually eat it, especialy since you are going with a quality food. Just keep an eye on them for hypogylcemia if they are being stubborn. I did let them taste test several dry foods. I let them pick by showing which they all ate better. Mine picked the Canidae. I can't get it local, but order it from petfooddirect.com.
