| HELP! My new puppy isn't eating... Hello everyone, I am new to YT and am so glad I found this site. I have a Yorkie Male (Teddy) who will be 1 next month and I just got a new baby girl today! I am really nervous because she has not eating anything since I picked her up at the airport she's only had water twice. She is 11 weeks old and weighs 1.7 lbs. I'm not sure if I should try to force feed her with a syringe or what. I tried Nutri cal, chicken, baby food and she won't open her mouth to take any of it. She has gone potty, twice #1 and once #2. all she wants to do is sleep. She really isn't trying to get to know my other dog and it really doesn't help that he gets nervous around her and runs away when she gets near. She doesn't want to play either. She's not weak or anything she does walk around some to hide or go potty. I know it's been a traumatic day for her because she had a 4 hour drive to the airport and a 4 hour flight to California. Should I give her more time? Is it normal for her to only want to sleep? Any suggestions would be great, I am going to take her to the vet tommorow but I hate to spend a lot of money for them just to tell me that she'll be alright once she settles. The breeder took her in on Wednesday and got a clean bill of health from her vet. Thanks in Advance |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | We haven't had our Yorkie for that long a time but I will tell you what our breeder told us until someone with more experience can get online and answer. You need to get some food and water into this little puppy even if you have to syringe it in! Put some NutriCal on your finger and if she won't lick it off your fingers (ours wouldn't), open her mouth and rub it inside her mouth. I could never get it under her tongue and seldom even on the roof of her mouth but I got it on her tongue and (sometimes) gums. Anyway, her reflex took over from there. Gotta go...back in a sec...mine needs to potty! BUT...you have got to get food and water into this puppy before she dehydrates! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I'm back...false alarm on the potty. Anyway, you need to be getting some water and/or food inside her. Use the NutriCal and a medicine dropper to get water in her if you have to. Our breeder words were "get some food and water in her no matter how or what." She suggested the chicken and rice but even if its only the broth, it's important to get some nutrients into her. I actually had to pull on the hair under the chin of my puppy to be able to get her mouth open to give the NutriCal. She wasn't even interested in licking it off my finger. If you can't get something into this puppy, you need to get to an ER vet, in my opinion. They can go down fast when they are young and so little. Mine was over 3 pounds and 14 weeks old and I was in a major panic. Not to scare you but it is vital that you get something into your puppy! Good luck... |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Has anyone seen this OP anywhere on the boards? I just can't get this little puppy out of my thoughts. I really, really would like to know if the puppy is okay. I guess it happens sometimes that someone starts a frantic thread and then doesn't return to update. It sure is agitating to those who get involved! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I hope he is ok. I know with Cali not eating in the beginning and having hypoglycemia she would eat the Cesar's dog food. It isn't a good food but at times like these any food you can get in them is good.

| Hi everyone, Sorry for not updating sooner. I took my Puppy Chloe to the vet on Saturday morning because she was just not eating and I didn't feel I was getting enough food into her myself. She was drinking on her own but I was just so nervous and the Nutrical was not cutting it so I decided to go with my gut and take her in..... While the vet was doing a check and telling me it was most likely nerves and she had to adapt and told me to keep doing what I was doing and to also rub Karo syrup on her gums every hour, I noticed something different and tried to stand her up and she just fell to the side. I was so scared the doctor took her to the back and gave her fluids and dextrose water and did bloodwork and it showed her sugar dropped! It happened so fast it was the most horrible feeling to think she was going to die right then and there. They kept her until the late afternoon for observation and when they called me to pick her up she was walking and looked much better. I'm still really nervous but she seems much better even though she is still hiding from us when we put her down. What can I do to help her feel more comfortable? I feel so helpless and hopeless and just feel like she's never going to get comfortable enough to where she wants to eat on her own. I have her on a strict schedule so she won't crash again. I think that she wasn't getting enough food in her Saturday because I was so scared I was hurting her she doesn't lick the syrup or nutrical I have to literally hold her head tight and make her open her mouth long enough to get the syringe in there really fast and squeeze everything in. I don't understand why she drinks water but won't eat the food and just wants to be in her little bed. Any more suggestions will be great!! |

| I thought I posted earlier today but for some reason it's not up I did it with quik reply noyt sure what happened. Anyway thanks for caring so much about my baby Chloe. Unfortunately she "crashed" yesterday while at the vet's office. Fortunately, we were there and not home so they were able to get her sugar back up fast. They monitored her all afternoon until early evening and she looked much better by the time I brought her back home. It was so scary I never had that experience with Teddy and he took to us in about 2 days and was eating fine after that. Chloe is just so scared I don't know what to do. I have her on a strict schedule now I feed her every 3 hours and give her nutrical 2 times a day and I rub Karo Syrup on her gums every hour so I don't have the same problem as yesterday. I thought I was hurting her before so I wasn't forcing alot of food into her but after that experience I've gotten much "tougher" and really am forcing the food in her. She does drink water on her own and I mixed some Karo syrup in it for the extra sugar. The Nutri cal seems to be making her stools yellow and really loose anyone else have that issue? I wish there was something more I could do to make her feel more comfotable at home but, when I put her down she finds a place to hide and sleep. Any suggestions? I feel so helpless and hopeless because It feels like she'll never come around. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Oh, I am so glad to hear that you were at the vet's when you had the crash! It would have frightened me to death! It sounds like you are doing everything you can to nourish her. I have read on here (and did this for our new puppy) that putting some article of clothing with your scent on it with her is comforting. Plus, I know when I was a child, people used to put a ticking clock wrapped in cloth in with their new puppies after weaning them. Supposedly the rhythm of the clock was soothing to the puppy and sounded somewhat like a heartbeat. I think it's probably only natural that she is scared and frightened right now. I would keep up the feeding, etc. and let her do the approach as she feels secure. Surely her puppy curiosity will finally get the better of her! I would guess it could take several days. I do know they sleep alot as puppies. Ours sprawls out and looks like road kill when she stops to rest/nap. Until I got used to her looking dead, I'd keep waking her up to be sure she was breathing! Thank you for making/taking the time to post again to update us on her condition. I'm sure she'll begin to adjust more and more this week and soon will be shadowing each step you take! |

Thank you for your concern, I know it will take time all puppies are different. I will have to take the next couple of days off to stay home with her. I only wish Teddy would want to play with her or something but, he just sniffs her and runs when I hold them both at the same time he starts shaking like he's scared. I'm sure that would help her get better faster. The funny thing is that we decided on a new puppy because I started anew job and Teddy was home alone and depressed and would not eat anything until someone came home and he doesn't even want anything to do with her. I'm sure they'll warm up to each other he's just a little scared. Thanks for the advice I'll try putting something of mine in her bed with her. | |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | What wonderful news! I'm so glad things have improved. Our puppy sorta did a total about face a day or so after we got her, too. Now there's not a shy bone in her...LOL...everything is a toy to her! |

| I need some help I have a 6 week old toy yorkie that is pooping everywhere, not what I need help with but thanks. Her name is Anniy and she is refusing the Karo syrup. The vet said she is healthy and she eats like a pig whenever we put food in front of her. She goes potty on the pad and is very energetic in the mornings when I give her breakfast. Should I force feed her the Karo syrup? She has 3 other snacks through the day as well as all major meals in proper portions. She has had all her shots and loves getting her belly scratched. She also likes jumping off the couch, and she rolls when she hits the floor. Thanks Last edited by KingsShadow; 12-21-2010 at 01:02 PM. |
