| I need advise!!! Please help... So I've recently bought my baby yorkie (14 wks) "mini dingo"s... (they are rawhide chews) since he is teething and he loves to chew (my hands and feet only - not his toys). I figured it was a GREAT because he seemed to love them since he would lay down and chew the thing down peacefully... WELL. one day that he had been chewing his dingo he started crying, I panicked and was gettin him ready to take him to the vet but all of a sudden stopped and he was fine.... AND... just today, I had given him another dingo and he was doing fine. Until he began crying again... oh my gosh! I panicked again and checked him out... and once again, he was fine. so now! I figured he swallowed the last tiny piece (big piece compared to his small throat) and it hurt him. aaaghhh... He loved them dingos but I threw the rest away. Does anyone know of any healthy, semi-hard, long-lasting, chewing "somethings" I can give to my pup?? Please help... |

My Little Man! Donating Member | Aw poor baby! Check his teeth because if he is teething, one of his teeth might be loose and hurt him. Rawhide is not great for yorkies. Some pieces can get stuck in their intestines causing blockage and may need surgery. The safe thing for them to chew is bully stick. I always throw out the little leftover pieces because dogs can choke on it.

YT 500 Club Member | Yes, try a bully stick or even one of those rope toys. Just make sure to keep an eye on the rope toy and throw it away when it gets too shredded. And Maxi is right about throwing away any chew when it gets too small. If your pup has already choked/tried to eat a big piece twice, I'd be nervous that he might accidentally do it again. Also, a word of advice on the hand/foot chewing. BE SUPER CONSISTENT! Meg can be a little bit of a monster when she wants to chew on our hands/feet and we won't let her, all because we weren't 100% consistent about it. Congrats on your new baby and good luck!!

| Bully sticks, antlers and raw bones are good chew choices for your baby. Rawhide is dangerous because it is not completely digestible and can block the intestinal tract. Also just FYI - the Dingo brand is made in China. A number of warnings have been issued regarding the health hazards of dog treats/chews made in China (especially chicken).

YT 2000 Club Member | Please dont feed your pup anymore rawhide, they are not good. My little poodle had one stuck in her intestines and even though she passed it on her own, I had no clue that she was even having issues untill she was acting constipated. I was getting ready to take her to the vets when she passed it. It was a waded up mess. . I felt so bad. .. I didnt no they were bad for dogs at that time. I know give them all natural bones, pig ears (on occasion) and cow hooves (these last forever ) I dont do the bully sticks cause they make my dogs ill.

| Yes definately stay away from the rawhide. My yorkie almost chocked as a puppy off of rawhide. At the time I didn't know it was a bad thing. The last piece gets wet and sticky and they swallow it and it is very hard to get down and to digest. Bully sticks are great and they love them.

| If it says rawhide - don't buy it. They can swallow the pieces and they are not digestible and the pieces can actually swell inside of their bodies and cause an obstruction. I used to give the dingo bones to Chip all the time before I learned about this. Now I only give my boys bully sticks or natural bones. Be weary of pig's ears too - they are natural but really high in fat. Some dogs are okay with it, but others get sick from them. We gave one to Chip and he loved it, but threw up several times after chewing on it.

My furkids Donating Member | Rawhide chews will not fully digest..Dogs have gotten them lodged in their throats and stuck in their intestines. I thought bully sticks were the way to go. I had given one to Sadie one night and she nearly chocked to death on me...THANK GOD she brought it up herself..I was ready to stick my finger down her throat...this happened at 11:00 at night and I am an hour away from the ER vet...I would have lost her,....needless to say I don't have ANY chewies in my house...I am considering the everlasting treat ball...they sell them at Foster and Smith and petsmart.

| Need clarity on "Natural Bones" Okay, Roxy really needs something to chew on. I stopped the rawhide, she wouldn't chew on the bully stick. I gave her a small lamb bone- (they look like mini cow hooves) and watched her closely- she shredded it in minutes and was very aggressive when I was taking the pieces from her. She loved the bone but I was afraid pieces might get stuck somewhere and cause problems. Right now she gets raw carrots and Natural Balance Dog Bisquits, but they don't last long enough to keep her busy. Is Natural Bones a brand name or what? |
