Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Dr. Terifaj's new blog entry - Xylitol is EXTREMELY deadly! Great article and info on Xylitol: Xylitol Poisoning: More Deadly Than Chocolate Be VERY careful if you have this sweetener or food/gum/candy with this sweetener in your home. Even a small amount is deadly to dogs.

| If just one piece of sugarless gum can kill a 20 pound dog, can you imagine how little it would take to kill a 4 or 5 pound Yorkie? I hope everyone reads this. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | Thank you for posting this. Good to know! Is sugarless gum / xylitol listed in the dangerous foods list sticky?

| We've been so blessed. Both Sasha & Xavier have consumed LARGE amounts of Orbit gum before we realized that they could figure out how to literally open the gum container and eat the pieces...Its been a while since thats happened thankfully! The gum is kept in the car now...

| Is this in the article or is this something you've read somewhere else? According to the article, one to two pieces can cause hypoglycemia in a 20 lb dog, not necessarily death. I'm not trying to correct you, I'm just trying to get my facts straight. Because if that is the case, there should be much more warning to dog owners! That's very scary!

Thor's Human Donating Member | I thought the article also said that liver failure was possible. Everyone knows about chocolate, but if this is 100x more dangerous as it says, we really need to get the word out there.

| Trident I have a friend whose small dog got into her purse and got out her Trident gum and it was VERY touch and go for a little while. It definitely made her extremely sick! I do not know how much she actually consumed, but the little amount she got of the sweetener caused quite a bit of health problems for the little one! I think that this needs to be something that we get the word out on a little more for sure!!! |

| Excellent post!!! Ann, I was just talking about this the other day. This is terrible but most vet offices carry products that contain Xylitol. I bought CET AquaDent additive for my babies drinking water. Before adding it to their water my gut told me to check all of the ingredients out. Needless to say I was shocked and very upset from what I found out. I have this stuff and almost gave all four of my babies it. I expect bad products to be out there but for actual vets to carry it is beyond wrong to me. I also found out that many differen't brands of toothpastes have Xylitol or something very similar in them. It's scary when you can't even feel safe brushing your own baby's teeth.

| Xylitol A few weeks ago there were some threads/posts about Xylitol. The Techs at our Vet's office gave me some CET liquid at the boyz annual in Feb. Looked at the ingredients and there was some Xylitol in it. The amount not displayed and it was near the end of the list. The Vet was surprised to see it in the CET liquid and was going to ask the company how much was in it. I'm of the mind set, small dogs, small amounts can be harmful. If you want to read the other posts just do a seach for Xylitol.
