| weight I just weighed my dog with me and have determine that he weighs about 9 pounds. He doesn't seem fat but feels very stockey. What should I be feeding him for weight control? What is the best dog food out there? I am starting to think what he is eating is fattening though he doesn't eat much of it. Purina dog chow |

| Purina dog chow isn't a good quality food and has a lot of fillers like corn. Corn is fattening. You might try a better quality food and follow the recommendations for the amount to feed on the package. Some good brands are Natural Balance, Solid Gold and Wellness. There is a thread on here that tells about other good brands. They eat less of these foods because they are better quality. Your baby maybe a bigger yorkie like one of mine is ( 12 pounds, 5 years old), but you still need to feed a better quality food.

| purina really isn't fattening. That's all we ever used to feed our dogs when I was growing up, there were only a handful of foods 50 years ago. We had chihuahuas on purina dog chow that lived to be 19 and never were over weight, we used to feed them once a day (well, more when they were pups). How much are you feeding him? He's probably just a bigger yorkie. Mine has always pretty much been on what people would call "good" foods, and she's big(14 lbs). |

| I just recently changed food from Royal Canin to Innova. Not due to weight gain, but they love it and I am convinced it is better for them!

| Before you put him on a diet, have you talked to your vet about his weight? Nine pounds may be a good weight for him. Although Yorkies are supposed to weigh seven pounds or less, there are tons of Yorkies out there that are pretty far from the standard. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | First of all, you can't go by weight alone, yorkies come in all sizes; he could be a perfect weight for his build. There are some threads to describe how exactly he should look, a yorkie won't have the extreme waist that some breeds have. I had to ask the vet about Joey, and he was indeed overweight. However, this doesn't indicate you are feeding the wrong dog food, it just means that he's eating too much. If your dog is indeed overweight make sure you cut out all bad snacks, and Joey's vet recommended that we cut Joey's food by 1/3 and replaced that with green beans, as they make the dog feel full. You need to have a goal in mind, and as with humans losing weight too fast can be unhealthy. Muscle is lost first, if the calorie reduction is too extreme. Frozen (thawed) green beans also make a healthy treat. Another thing you can do, is see that your dog gets more exercise, and if someone is giving him human treats stop that because it's not good even if he's not overweight. Some Purina products are better than others; I would probably avoid the lower priced varieties, for several different reasons.

| He has his check and shots set for the 20th. I really don't feel that he is overweight. He is pretty stocky. His parents were both under 5 pounds so it is just kinda making me wonder if I am feeding him the wrong type of food. He doesn't get a whole lot of treats, (cause he is a naughty dog, lol). He gets plenty of exercise so maybe he is just stocky. I guess we'll see on Monday. Thanks for all the great advice. I love this forum. |
