| 1 month and NO WEIGHT GAIN! So I got my baby on March 13. Its been almost one month and she has not gain an oz. I took her to her first vet visit March 16 and she weight 1lb 2oz. I took her in for her third visit (second visit they didn't weight her? Not sure why) and she weigh the same exact weight, 1lb 2oz I work until 5 and her Doctors appt was at 6 so I rushed home to get her with out feeding her like I normally do when I get home and took her into the vet. I have a bowl of food and water in her x-pen all day so she eats whenever she gets hungry. But..... could that had made a diffrence? Shes seems bigger and longer from the first time I got her but she STILL weighs the same I'm a little concern now... shes due for another follow up in 3-4 weeks. Oh and BTW.... she is running, eating, drinking and playing just fine. Just not gaining weight. I have her on Royal Canine Puppy 33. Should I switch? And what would you recommend? Another thing is..... my vet recommend for Libbie to get the Lepto and Lime(I think thats how you spell it) shot. But I heard so many bad things about Lepto... and considering my baby only still weighs 1lb 2oz should I go forward with it or stand my grounds and say NO WAY!?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I do not give any of the non-core vaccines. I only give the core vaccines, which is distemper, parvo, rabies. The "DHPP" vaccine also gives hepatitis and parainfluenza vaccines. If she is not gaining weight - what is her age? Does her body "feel" right to in the rib area (not too skinny)?

She is tiny so every morning, afternoon when I get home from work and night I make sure she eats at least a handful. I leave food and water for her 24/7 in her x-pen.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | My Marcel is a smaller one (3 lb adult) and I can't imagine him gaining 1/2 pound a week as a pup, lol ! He gained about an oz. a week from when I got him (at 16 weeks) to when he stopped gaining weight and stabilized toward his adult weight. Tinies can have later growth spurts. I hate to mention this, but not gaining wt. can be symptom of iiver shunt, which is not uncommon in yorkies. Is she having any odd symptoms at all, or none? Also, when Marcel was a pup, I fed him 4x a day until he was about 5-6 mths, then went to 3x, and now he is at 2x day. Maybe you aren't quite meeting her calorie requirements for growth, through no fault of your own. Is she eating the correct quanitity according to your bag of food? I mean, you could try adding in some canned food to get her to eat a bit more...

| Absolutely do not get the Lepto it is totally non necessary. Not only that but there have been case studies done on smaller breeds dying as result of gettin lepto shot!!!! I also agree tinies do not gain weight as fast or as frequent as larger yorkies, I would get a weight on her at least once a week.. If your vet is far away I would go on E-bay and buy a postal scale so you can monitor weight bcuz you certainly do not want baby to loose weight either. Hugs!!!!!! If she has not gained any weight I would also have her tested for liver problems?

I used a postal scale and I weighed Marcel every week - it's a good idea to weigh these tinier ones, just to know where they're at in a growth cycle.

| 1 month and NO WEIGHT GAIN I have a 4 month old and I was having the same problem, so I fed her in the morning with Eagle Pack Holistic Canned Food for Puppies and basically spoon fed her till I got her eating it on her own, as well at lunch and evening, now she eats allot better and has been putting weight on, I recommend a good quality food, as well from all I have heard Science Diet is not very good. Eagle Pack is an american product and is great, as well I feed mine Arcana Hard Food. Now I also gave mine Nutrical vitamin every morning as well. She now eats her soft food for breakfast and eats the hard food for all other meals. My girl just was not eating much, but was still playing and seemed healthy but no weight gain and certainly did not eat much. I think that these babies just need extra attention and as well should not be sold to us before 12 weeks which then I don;'t think we would have half the problems we do. Hugs to you and your new baby! |
