| 2 pounds yorkie for scaling? Hi all, I really need help and advice on this. I have a two pound (could be less than 2 pounds! havent been weighing her as she stopped growing when she was 4 months old) 1 year old yorkie -Tang Tang who has really foul smelling teeth. Her baby teeth did not drop off and we have tried to extract those that we can extract. We have given rawhide for her to chew and used oral care to wipe the gums n teeth. The local vet advised that we need to bring her for scaling and extraction of those baby teeth as she is having tooth decay issue...But the thing is, she is so small and I am so afraid that once we bring her to the vet, she might never come out. One of our fren, who owns pet farm warn us that she cannot be fixed and cannot go for scaling - because they will inject anaesthetic and for her size, the risk is too high. On the other hand, her breeder told us that we can bring her for extraction and scaling but we have to find reputable vets -those who are experienced in handling these small dogs and often involved in operations.... We are in such a dilemma now. Anyone has experience this before?

| Hm, that's a tough one. There HAVE been tiny little Yorkies get spayed/neutered and they're absolutely fine. The risk putting them under and having them die isn't a very high percentage - but you would know what's best for your baby. It is important to get those baby teeth out or she will have foul smelling breath forever, lol. Also - rawhides are not very safe for the little babies, or even the big babies. Jackson's 13 pounds at 5 months he choked on a rawhide over a month ago! It was scary. I learned they are not digestible. I would find other things to try to get them fall out. But, your vet will know what is best.

| thanks for your reply. Yes, she does not eat the rawhide, she just bites them and leaves it alone after a while. We made sure we are around when we give her the rawhide. Yeap, I think I would have to ask the vet again and seek their advice.

| My little guy is a bit heavier than yours, he weighs 3.5 to 4 lbs depending.. we just went through it all with him and he did just fine. As a matter of fact the vet told us that he might feel under the weather for a few days, but the minute we got him home he was his old self and rambuctious as ever.

| My vet told me the little ones usually do better as they don't have to have as much aneshtesia. I know where you're coming from though, it is scarey as mine is also around 2 lbs and I need to get her in to get spayed and get some teeth pulled. It concerns me more that your baby has not grown since it was 4 mos old. I got mine at 5 1/2 mos. she was 1 1/2 lbs and has put on 8 oz or maybe a little more since I got her(she stays between 2 and 2 1/2 lbs). Have you had a full blood panel done on your pup? Would love to see pictures of your baby |

| I recently had my Little Didi's several baby premolar teeth and baby teeth Pulled and teeth cleaned. Now his teeth does not smell and so white and shiny. it is uncomfortable for him to have double teeth too have food stuck between them. I can tell He is much happier, now. It is definitely worthy to have them removed.

| I agree with the breeder. The vet needs to be experienced, do preop blood work, place an IV and use the correct type of anesthesia (Isoflurane or Sevoflurane gas).

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Before you decide not to proceed w/ anything - interview a few vets and see if there is someone who is skilled w/ tinies. I waited to get Marcel neutered until he was 10mths - and he was under 3lbs at the time - he did great for the surgery and snapped right back, but I was so scared. I don't know how to help you find a good vet where you are, but I do know other 2-pound babies have had successful surgeries. Scary though, for sure.

Yes, we did a full body checkup and blood test for her. Am now at work, will post pictures of her when I get home The blood test was ok, no heart murmur. However, she had kennel cough when she was a puppy, and from the xray, her lungs were scarred but clear and her heart size is a tad too big for her -which translates that she MAY have heart problem and needs to be on lifetime medication in future. She cannot exercise too much or run too much as it would take a toll on her heart. Yea, she is not really a healthy healthy yorkie but I still want to keep her even though I knew her situation. The vet did mention that with proper diet, she can still do without heart medication for now. That is why we were worried for her to go through with the operation....*sigh* think I have to go back to the vet whom our breeder friend have recommended.

| If she really does have a heart problem, I'd personally want to take her to a cardiologist before attempting surgery. Yorkies have abnormally large hearts for their size though, so it is normal for them to look enlarged on xray to vet who don't know much about the breed. Of course a cardiologist would be able to give you a better idea of what is going on.

| My 2 cents of contribution ... I once had a 2 pound puppy on surgery for a bad umbilical hernia mom had caused biting and shaking the umbilical cord.... she had her hernia repaired and got fixed at the same time. Perfect surgery , no problems and she ended up without any scars, it was amazing !!! My vet uses "propoffol" i may have mispelled.... and he is very experienced on small and tiny breeds !!! He always told me that as long as they are at least 2 pounds it is safe to do the anesthesia !! Hope that helps your decision ! Good luck !
