| Prednisone and Weight Gain? Anyone know if the weight gain that is so common with prednisone happens quickly? Ryder was started on pred Thursday afternoon after he hurt his back. He has appeared to gain a substantial amount of weight (maybe a few ounces but when your not even 3lbs that's a big deal) in just a few days. Granted he's on crate-rest and hasn't done a thing but eat and sleep but I am wondering if this is all water weight or if it is actual fat Anyone have experience with this? His regimen is the quarter tablet of pred (super teeny tiny) once a day for seven days, and then every other day for four days. He is to be in his crate or in my arms (with exception of potty of course) for four weeks. I hate him being on it but will suck it up and finish the treatment. If it happens again we will have to look into something else. Thanks pals.

Therapy Dog Donating Member | Hmm..don't know about doggies but I know when my son was on it for his asthma many years ago he got very bloated and had severe headaches from it and we had to ween him off it very slowly. I would think that doggies would get the same reaction as well. So sorry to hear about your baby.

| My little Tucker has been on Prednisone for two weeks, and he has gained weight. It seems to increase his appetite. He was on a quarter of a pill each day for one week; then every other day for a week. (That's where we are now.) The third week, he will take one every three days. He was bruised from a fall, and couldn't seem to get over it. He's doing fine now. |

| Sugar gained a ton of weight while on pred but it took a few weeks to notice. I had to drastically readjust his harness though. My husband started calling him little football because he was so round.

| I need to find out how this works. Mine are cut in 1/2 already and these are the instructions 1/2 tablet 2xday for 3 days(Friday, Saturday, Sunday) 1/2 tablet 1xday for 3 days(Mon,Tues, Wed) 1/2 tablet 1xday every other day until gone(3 pills left). I would think I would start her on it every other day Friday, but, sons fiance says Thursday and she's about done with nursing school and a phamacy tech. |

| Thanks guys. I guess it is probably not the pred making him gain at this time, but more likely the fact he is a little piggy and has been laying around doing nothing, and that he's been getting lots of treats?

| Now, the one thing I have noticed with Haley is she's drinking and peeing more. |

| Yes, I will agree with that one. It's why I was wondering if the gain was water weight... I can't wait till we're done with this stuff!!

| We have a lot of experience with Prednisone here. Piccolo was on it for nine months due to her auto-immune disease. It saved her life, but it does have many side effects. It certainly caused weigh gain for her and pretty quickly, too. (In fact, she was considered doggy obese.) She gained two lbs. The amount of prednisone slowly went up, then slowly went down. Now, she has lost all of the weight, thank heavens. I am sure the weight will come off as your furbaby is weaned off of the medicine.
