| First vet visit--my questions!! please advise Hi everyone-- We took 4 month old Scamp to his first vet visit (with us) this saturday. [We had to man a garage sale we had already scheduled so dh chose took pup] He was scheduled to get his last distemper/parvo vaccine. He was also supposed to get a fecal exam, full exam, weight and maybe a rabies shot. The visit: He was weighed (now 4.8lbs), fully examinied and they gave him a rabies shot. The vet said he couldn't give him the other shot(s?) too because hes too small to handle them all at the same time, which I totally understand and was going to ask that before giving him the rabies shot (some vets dont even give that until 6 mo). Dh said vet was very nice, examined every inch of pup, said he was very healthy, said he thought pup would mature at mroe like 10lbs than the 7-8 we were told by breeder when we got him a few weeks ago. They also gave us a puppy kit which included a rather large bag of science diet puppy food, training DVD and book, parasite pill, scheduled an appt for next weekend for his other shot(s?). No fecal exam, not even mention of it dh said, although he said the vet did ask if pup was pooping and peeing normally/regularly to which dh answered yes. My questions Im hoping you ladies will enlighten me on.... 1. Why did he choose to give the rabies shot over the distemper,etc....it had been 4 weeks since the last round. If I had been at the vet vs dh I would have probably insisted on that since I was excited to let him go outside and begin outside potty training, etc.....and now i have to wait another week! 2. I know he was wormed three times before we got him, but isnt a worm fecal exam routine for a first puppy visit? Have you ever NOT had one with a new pup? Maybe theyll do that this coming weekend at the next appt? Should I insist on it? 3. I thought Ive read on here that Science diet is bad. This vet said it was great.......big red flag for me, but Im not sure why--please enlighten me (gently ) 4. I thought that as a weight generalization what the pup weigs at 12 weeks you double and thats a good indication what his adult weight will be, at 12 weeks he was 3.5 lbs the breeder told us, am I incorrect? pup is 16+ weeks now and weighed 4.8--whats your guess on his mature weight? [WE DO NOT CARE WHAT HE WEIGHS, THIS IS JUST A CURIOSITY QUESTION]

| Love the name, Scamp!! It just conjures up such a happy little guy. I don't know why he would do the Rabies over the Distemper/Parvo. Glad to see he broke them up. But I'm thinking like you, that the Puppy Distemper/Parvo is given on a schedule, rabies can sort of be whenever. hmmm, hopefully someone else can give some insight. If it was me, I'd call and ask for his reasoning. He shouldn't be offended to explain and if he is, then that would be a red flag to me. I usually see a 'new' vet want a fecal, if nothing else, so they'll have a base line to go off of. But it could be that he just got distracted with everything else and forgot to mention it. I'd just bring some poo on your next visit and ask for it to be done. I'm not fond of Science Diet, but I've found that most vets are. No red flag, truly most vets simply don't have an in depth knowledge about nutrition. It's just not something that they spend a lot of time on in vet school. Just do your own research and decide what's best for you and Scamp. (Did I mention, I love that name!) Determining the finished weight of these guys is anything but an exact science. It's a rough guess that the 12 week weight doubled will be the adult weight. So if he was 3.5 at 12 wks, you'd sort of think 7 lbs as an adult, but there are so many determining factors that it's really hard to say. That's just one other aspect that's so cool about this breed. Ya just don't know what the adult is going to look like, color, height, weight wise until they are done.

| I imagine that he got the rabies because dogs have to have it by 16 weeks in some states. I would also have chosen the other vaccine though and waited on the rabies. The other vaccines need to be given 3-4 weeks apart... In general I would not recommend Science Diet based on their ingredients. I would consider Science Diet Nature's Best and prescription diets. You can just request that a fecal be done but if he has already been dewormed 3 times (that's already a lot), everything is probably fine.
