Is my Yorkie's wound healing normally? Sammy was bitten by another dog last week ; he has a wound near his right eye. I took him to the vet, the Vet shave some of his hair off to clean the area, and then they put in one stitch at the wound. They didn't give me any instruction on after-surgery-care. Can anyone tell me how do I tell if the wound around the suture is healing properly? He has a large scab around and underneath the suture, it looks like it's gotten much bigger now than one week ago. There seem to be some yellowish crust forming on the outer rim of the brown scab, so I'm not too sure if that's a sign of infection or if the crust is dried up antibiotic ointment. There is no foul odor on the wound. He's on antibiotics, both ointment and oral medication. I wipe his wound with sterile gauze and chlorhexiderm solution twice a day before applying the antibiotic ointment. When I am cleaning and applying the ointment, it doesn't seem to hurt him. He's also wearing an E colar. He is still very playful and active, and eating normally. Please tell me your experience with a wound with suture, and how do they look normally when it's healing? Can a dog get an infection even if they're on antibotics? Any help will be greatly appreicated! Thank You!

I am sorry you pup got bitten. It does sound like it is healing normally if there is a scab on it. If there is no red irritation around the area I would think there is no infection. I would call the vet to make sure tho. Better safe than sorry. Wishing him a speedy recovery,

I would keep up with the regime the vet gave you. As long as he is getting antibiotics, and the ointment is applied, then it should heal correctly. Try to keep him from rubbing it and scratching it as this will increase chances of infection. I would definitely keep an eye on the wound and the pup. If you see any inflammed areas that are not calming down, I would contact his vet, as this might be an infection. Best of luck

In my exp....the yellow color doesnt sound that great... the wound should look clean if it is healing properly...If you are worried I would take him in just so they can do a little re check, people would always do that when I worked at the vet, just so the vet can look at it to make sure it is healing properly and not getting an infection, he should be ok if he is on antibotics..if it isnt red or puffy or goozing anything out of it he should be ok. Worse comes to worse if you have doubts take him in to get a fast little recheck, most vets wont even charge you for that...or take a pic and show me
