| Help, They just had Avocado! I was confused - thought it was ok My mom was cutting up avocado & I thought it was safe - said it was in some dog food. But now, I see it is bad for them! How concerned should I be right now?? I don't really want to make them vomit. The had it 30-45 minutes ago & seem to be fine. Roxy is not quite 3 1/2 lbs, Bubba is 4 1/2 or so

| My neighbor's dog died from eating avacado but I think the owner cut up an entire avacado for the dog to eat. Their vet told them that there is some chemical in avacado that is poisonous to dogs. I would call your vet and see what they recommend since you have tiny babies.

| The toxin is called "Persin" that avacados contain. It is toxic to a wide variety of animals. I would keep an eye on them just in case. Usually the cases that have been reported are ones in which the animals have ingested large amounts of the toxin,ie. the fruit, its skin, or the leaves of the tree. Keep us posted . |

| my vet is closed - I'm out of state anyway. I have researched online & on Yt. I called the poison control center. I'm just concerned, and wondering if anyone has given small amts to their yorkie before & how they reacted?? They are acting perfectly fine - Bubba is actually begging my mom for something else now. It has been about an hour since they ate it and she gave them probably at least a tsp or a bit more than that each They are far from lethargic. Roxy was playing and running around and earlier chewing on a meat bone that was several days old.

| This was a very tiny amount? If So then I am thinking that perhaps they ought to be ok by now. However, Iam unsure . therefore, I would advise you or your mom to call a emergency vet number to be on the safe side just to make certain. Maybe the most it will do at this point is to make them have diarrhea . At least talk to a emergency vet. Just for peace of mind. I would not want anything to happen to your precious little ones.

They both just went out a bit ago - all they did was tinkle. They are both laying down right now. Roxy next to me under a blanket & Bubba next to my mom. They have been acting perfectly fine. I just don't know how long it would take to see something bad. I'm also concerned if I should give them something else to eat - something that might help pull anything toxic out quicker - like a bit of banana or some bread or even a hard treat - or if it would be best not to feed them anything.

Do you think I should give them anything else to soak it up?

| I think it just depends on the dog. My parents dogs get avocados from the tree and eat the whole thing and just leave the pit and nothing has ever been wrong with them.

| I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you but I wanted to say that I hope your babies are okay. It sounds to me like they are going to be fine but please keep us updated.

Avocado Dog Toxicity For dogs the avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark contain a toxic principle known as Persin. The Guatemalan variety, a common one found in stores, appears to be the most problematic. Avocado in dog food should not be a problem if in a product manufactured by a known company. | |

| Ronda, How big are your parents dogs? One of the things I read online was it is the Guatemalan avocados that are the problem. The ones my 2 had was from Chili - so how the Guatemalan, Californian, Chili, Mexico avocados differ, I have no idea.
