| Licking injuries: good or bad? I've heard both and can't figure out which is right????? Are they allowed to lick? does it help it heal? or the opposite??

| I'm not sure about just normal injuries, but I'm pretty sure they shouldn't lick stiches.

| I think it depends on the injury and how much licking.

| A dog's saliva has an antibacterial agent in it. I have even let my dog lick my minor injuries and they do not get infected, and I am very prone to infections. I have to put neosporine on everything. I would not let them lick if there are stitches as that needs to remain dry |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Dogs mouths are actually cleaner than human mouths, and have more "good" bacteria. For years it was thought licking could help a wound heal; I'm not sure if this has changed. There are some exceptions to this that I know about, for example, when certain ointments are used, or if it's an irritation rather than a wound, too much licking could cause it to go raw, and an infection could result. Of course, they shouldn't lick stitches because this would dissolve them too fast.
