| Anal Glands Ok, I have a question re anal glands (expressing them). Do you express your little gal/guy anal glands? If so, how do you do it and how often? Ailee started scooting one day and sort of seemed like she didn't want to go potty (seemed embarrassed by the whole thing). She rubbed the carpet with her little butt but I'm not sure if they were released completely or if I should take her to the vet. She scooted her butt once or twice one day and then did it a 2nd day. I haven't seen her do it since. How do I know if it still causing her discomfort, are there signs to look for? Or should I just take her to the vet to double check, I surely don't want her to fall ill. Any suggestions advice is greatly appreciated. |

| Scooting is a sign of the anal glands needing expressing. I do mine on the ones that need it, but not all of them need to have it done. Your best way of learning how to do it is to have your vet show you. That is how I learned. You don't want to do it wrong and hurt them. |

| Schatzie and Annabelle have their glands expressed when they are at the groomer. They both have also had theirs done at the vet too. I have never been "comfy" myself doing it and personally rather have a trained person to do so.

| I read in a yorkie book that when they scoot on their behind that they need their anal glands expressed. I had seen Annie doing it when she was little and asked the vet about it. He said that she was fine and didn't need it. After the next time I realized that she was doing it immediately after she went to the bathroom, and as it turned out she had some poop stuck to her bottom and was just trying to clean it off So from then on I would check her bottom to make sure it is clean and she would be fine. Now her poop is solid and she doesn't do it anymore. So just make sure that that is in fact the problem and not a dirty toosh Our little darlings like to be clean as well, I suppose! |

| At first when Hercules would scoot, I thought it was cute. That was until I read on here that it was a sign of the anal glands needing to be expressed. So at the next vet visit I told him and he did it. I don't want to do it myself, but that's just my personal feeling. It's completely ok to do it yourself, but like said earlier, get your vet to show you how. Good luck.

| One of my yorkies does it all the time (scooting on her butt). She goes around in little circles. I have taken her to the vet and he expresses them, and then she's right back at it. I could take her once a week and it wouldn't be enough. And, I don't want to do it myself. I draw the line right there! lol I don't mind cleaning their butts, but not "expressin" those glands. So, she just does her little "helicopters" as we call it. I hope it's not hurting her. I don't think so. She's healthy and doesn't have anything wrong with her. ???? |
