| Strange Reactions to Advantage So, I have a question for you all... After we give Bella her Advantage (that the flea stuff that you run in between her shoulders and kind of down her back), she acts really funny. She will put her head down and act almost shameful. We have to give her the Advantage at night, b/c she doesn't seem to snap out of this behavior until she wakes up. She doesn't want to look at us or sleep with us. In fact, she will jump off the bed and go into the family room and sleep on a little bed in there. Last time we gave it to her, she went onto the floor and stood near the wall, head down and shaking (she does the shaking thing before baths as well). So, I don't know if she is having a reaction to the Advantage, like maybe it's not making her feel right, or if she just doesn't like the smell or the feel of it. Any thoughts? |

| Rylie had a reaction a couple years ago when my parents still had him. My mom bought a flea liquid on the shelves at petsmart and he had a bad reaction where she applied it. He got a hot spot and list hair in that area. He's never had a reaction to one of the flea controls from the vet but he too always acts wierd after I apply it. He will jump off the bed and pace some and run around until he finally goes to sleep. I have just always figured he didn't like the way the luquid felt or remembered the feeling of the reaction that one time. I don't know. I bought comfortis to try this year. It's an oral flea control

| You could always try Frontline instead. If the same thing happens, it is probably just a Yorkie thing.

Spinosad but, I think Prince's vet said dogs under 5 lbs. should not use it. (Prince is 5.4 lbs...that's a little too close for comfort.) Have you heard that?

YT 1000 Club Member | Your only using this once a month right? None of my animals like it when you first apply it. I think it just feels funny to them. Just like if someone would put a liquid on your scalp in the same fashion and you could feel it running down your scalp. If the skins not red or blotchy where you put it on it's probably fine. Also if your having a big flea problem don't bathe after putting it on for about 3 weeks. It says it's water proof but it was less affective for us when I was bathing her within a week or 2. With permission from the vet I was having to reapply it before a month was up then we figured out it was because I was bathing her too much. Hope this helps! |

| Prince has a strong reaction to Frontline. After I administer it, he will run around, rubbing his face on everything. This goes on until the product dries. One time he seemed so stressed out that I put him in the shower, and rinsed and shampooed it off. I'm not sure what to use. For some reason, topical seems safer to me than oral applications. What are your thoughts?

YT 1000 Club Member | I've never tried any oral ones. I'm more leary I think about the oral because if there's a reaction I can't wash it off. My vet doesn't sell the oral kind so I guess that makes me question it. |

| Tatum and Stormie (our Aust Shep) take Sentinel (oral med for heartworm and flea) and also take Comfortis (for fleas). Our flea problem is so outrageous in our area that this is what our vet recommended. They take one on the 1st of the month and the other on the 15th. Sometimes these pills don't actually give coverage for the full month so alternating them keeps them covered at all times. As for the Comfortis, my two have been on it for quite a while.... maybe 9 months or so.... and have had no adverse reactions at all. Tatum is right at 6 lbs. so the vet didn't mention anything about weight issues. I think 5.4 lbs would be safe also but that's really a personal decision you need to make with your vet.

Have you tried Advantage? I haven't heard anything terrible about Comfortis (except that it cannot be used with off-label doses of Ivermectin) but it is just a bit new for me to be comfortable with. I'd like to watch side effect reports for awhile but it's great that it is working for most people. I personally would not use Revolution or Advantage Multi.

I'm concerned about Advantage because of what the OP said.

All dogs react differently. A reaction is possible but not too likely. See, your pup doesn't do well on Frontline but Ellie does okay with it, so it depends on the dog... Advantage Multi is too new, I don't like over-the-shoulders heartworm medication, etc. Revolution has a pretty high mortality rate associated with it compared to other brands (if more people use Rev. this wiill be the case but I think Heartgard is way more popular with way less deaths a year and Interceptor is also pretty popular). The heartworm protection from Rev. is also being questioned. I would not trust it for heartworms at all. The disease is just too serious.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | My Prada can't have any of those flea products, so last night I attended a holistic group discussion on parasites and natural ways to treat them, I found a product called Diatomaceous earth, but I had never heard of it, I spend half of the night searching for information and I just posted a new thread here, I can't wait to see if anyone have used it and the results.. hugs, cArmen in nj |

| the lowest dose for comfortis is 5-10lbs. I haven't given it to my dogs yet. I read the article and it seems to be talking about high doses of ivermectin - such as in treating demodectic mange it said. I will have to look into it more to make sure it's okay with heartgard
