| What is a good weight for spay/neuter? Just wanted to get some input from people who have information about minimum weights and ideal weights for spay/neuter? What do doctors' seem to think, and what experiences can you share w/me? Thanks so much! Maggie & Apple xoxoxo |

| My vet said 5 lbs or 5 months of age. It was obvious that Gracie Ruth was not going to make the 5lb mark and I felt that 5 months was a bit too young, so I waited in the end of her 6th month. I think she was just at the 3lb mark by then.

| Thanks Teresa M Thanks for your post...I presume all went well w/your baby @3 lbs...My concern is Apple won't be 5 lbs. @ 6 months...In fact, I don't think she will ever reach that weight...Based on how long I've had her, she should weight just under 4 lbs. @ 6 months, and that seems to be too small to me? Will you elaborate on your baby's surgery, outcome, etc.? Thanks Again, Maggie & Apple xoxox |

| miss buffey was spayed right at 6 months and i think she was 2.8lb. she did great and had no problems with the procedure (she did have a reaction to the pain meds which required a visit to the ER vet on easter morning costing about $450 - doh). she healed very nicely and it was hard keeping her non-jumpy and calm during her healing process. i wish i HAD waited a bit longer to spay her but in the end, it was fine my other little girl was 8 months old and a little over 3lbs (about 3lbs, 2oz) and she also did great. the breeder had this done before she came home to me per my request the only reason i would recommend waiting a bit is to see if you baby will need any baby teeth pulled. if that is the case, it can be done during the spay. as far as her weight goes, as long as your vet is experienced and feels comfortable doing surgeries on smaller animals, you should be fine hope that helps!

| txrosegirl That info helped, tremendously! Nice to hear about small ones doing so well...I'm not so naive to think complications do not happen, but then they happen to large dogs too...Thanks for your reply! Maggie & Apple xoxoxo |

| i also wanted to add, my youngest, bree (who is in my avatar), will also get spayed but not until she is at least a year old. she is only a little over 2lbs and 6 months old. i trust my vet (he is very experienced in small animals - not just dogs and cats) and when i first brought bree in to him when she was about 3.5 months asked me when i was going to get her spayed because he recommended i do it at 6 months. i was like no way lol. i said i would wait until i thought she was as big as she is going to get and not a second before. he is fine doing it whenever i am comfortable but i about fainted when he said at the 6 month mark it is not because i do not trust him but because she is still so small. she is still under 2.5lbs

| txrosegirl Wow, 3! I, sometimes, think about getting another yorkie, for Apple, but I find my hands full just her!...At what ages did your first two girls go into heat, and did you wait 'till after the first heat...I'm from the old school, where they always waited until they'd had one heat...However, it seems the new rule of thumb is to do it before the first heat...Information is forever changing, and for someone that's been around as long as me, that can get confusing...I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can, and make the right decision for Apple....I used my last vet for 30 years, and then he retired...I'm totally lost w/o him, and trying to build trust in this new clinic, w/3 female vets...You have no idea how hard it is to lose a vet you, totally, put your trust in.... | All of my other dogs were done between 5 1/2 and 6 mos. The smallest was around 3 lbs. The one now I'm waiting on until she's a year old as she's not 2 1/2 lbs yet. The vet said she seems to think the littler they are the better they do, but, I've read so many horror stories lately |
