Just one very runny eye I will try the vinegar as in the recent post, but it seems to me if Daisy had allergies it would be in both eyes. The strange thing is that since the spring season has begun her eye is much worse. Her face is just wet with it. It really bothers her and she has hurt herself twice this evening trying to rub it. She just brushes all her hair down into her face anyway. When I cleaned her face a little while ago and held a cold wet washcloth against her eye (closed of course) she gave a big sigh and leaned into it. It just broke my heart. My vet is not the brightest guy and seems to have pat answers for everything and hasn't been much help. For this he just said "small dogs often have runny eyes." So I am looking to you folks.

If it is inflamed, the cool rag should reduce the swelling and also give her comfort as you said. I would continue doing that until you can get to a REAl vet. Because obviously his pat answer is not working for your poor little baby, or you. (And it is not working for me either.) Maybe she has something lodged in the cornea. I mean she is trying to tell you that it is more than just runny, I just wish the vet had showed her a little more concern. It has taken me awhile, but I have learned to listen to my babies, like you are doing. Don't wait, get to another vet this week, even if you have to go to the emergency vet. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Please keep me posted.

I would find another vet or ask for a referral to an opthamologist. Trust your instincts. Something isn't right.

The thing is this eye has always been runny. It is just worse now. I am a midwife and know that newborns sometimes have clogged tear ducts, I thought this might be the case with her but it never cleared up. It is usually no more than a mess on her face, but today it seems to be itchy and sore. Do Yorkies, or small dogs for that matter, sometimes have weaker tear ducts? Why are runny eyes common in small dogs and what if it isn't allergies? What is it and why? Look at my album to see that she has had this a while and that she doesn't seem bothered by it. 7 month pictures were yesterday about 2 hours after her bath and about 30 minutes after she played outside. (will post one from yesterday below)

Blocked Tear Ducts If you have a Maltese with excessive tear stains and tearing a visit to your veterinarian may be needed. It is not unusual to find that your Maltese may have completely clogged tear ducts which need to be irrigated by your vet. A veterinary opthamology specialist that I discussed tear staining with also indicated that as many as 20% of small dogs, such as Maltese, may be born with lower tear ducts that are physically closed. These may need to be surgically opened. Tear Stains | |
