While my girl's teeth were on their way out, the hubby was playing tug-o-war with a soft rope chew and managed to pull one of her baby canines off while it was hooked into the rope toy. She did not seem phased by it but just kept on playing with him! There was no blood on the white rope. I was worried she'd be in pain! A few days later, I was guilty of wiggling one really loose one off of her while she was on my lap and I was grooming her and inspecting her mouth. There wasn't much blood that came with this either (only the bit of darker dried stuff inside the tooth). Now, getting carried away with the rate and ease of her teeth coming off, one day soon after that, as I was cleaning her eyes and face with a face/wash cloth, I decided to clean her teeth a bit too. Well, I wriggled one off pretty easily too, though not as easy and quick as the first time. That was the last time. This time around had some blood coming off with the tooth. And this was the only time it really bothered her though she didn't cry out and for a couple of months afterwards, she wouldn't trust mommy with an open mouth anymore. Between two vets, she had the rest of the 5 baby teeth (one further towards the back) plus 2 adult ones removed. Months later, she has finally forgiven and forgotten about the bad things mommy did to her.

On another note, yogurtbear, I notice you are located in Surrey. I hope you've found a great vet already and I hope it isn't Guildford Animal Hospital! I would NOT recommend dental surgery by them in spite of how friendly the vet seems and how well he appears to handle wriggly worms and how smooth he is in leaving a great first impression on your unsuspecting puppy with irresistible bribes of yummy liver treats! Does it sound like I'm complimenting him?? LOL. Well, I'm seriously not! P.S. Oh, and did I forget to mention how he can make the most wriggly worm ever not pace around the table threatening to jump right off and actually manages to have her stand still for whatever routine physical examination--listening to the heartbeat, checking out the limbs... Um, yeah, just don't go there! I have changed vets since then myself. Last edited by Miao; 03-17-2009 at 12:24 AM.

Wow, I guess they must like padding bills or ripping people off one way or another on a regular basis. They charged for an extra tooth they didn't pull and left in. During the first visit, when we were there as drop-ins and were scheduling a dental surgery after the routine puppy wellness exam for new patients, we discussed wanting a urinalysis done as well as the pre-op blood work. The reception was already billing me for the urine test when we have not yet even CAUGHT the sample for them yet. I mean, other vets I've been to generally don't pre-charge you for services not yet rendered and even after we said, we'll see if we can manage to catch her pee during the week. I guess it was a good thing he forgot about my request for a full body x-ray and any other tests run that would help keep a record of her while she's healthy to use in future in case there are any changes for comparison. And the exchange the girls there had on "how much [the doctor] wants to charge them" for the teeth work... that was when we were told by the doctor to ask the girls out front for a quote on the dental work as he "really [doesn't] know" the prices. I thought that was weird and decided to ignore that bad feeling because he was recommended to us by a puppy classmate. But it's good to hear that you found yourself another vet! I'm just a little surprised that you've already been to this one and also had a negative experience. LOL
