| Warning about flossies/bully sticks Just want to pass on this little bit of information- - - Brady had Diarrhea this week and the vet was puzzled as to what was wrong. She sent his stool out to a lab but I haven't heard anything yet. Brady's breeder was in N.Y. the beginning of the week because she is a delegate with AKC so she didn't email me back until Thurs. By then I had taken him to the vet but could have saved $180. if I had waited to hear from her but I was concerned. After describing what the stool looked like she said she thought it was a bacteria called Spirochetes. She suggested a med. called Metronidazole and it cleared up within a day. No one is sure how it is contracted but when I told the breeder I was giving him Flossies and Bully sticks she said if they aren't sealed in plastic that this bacteria could adhere itself to mice, rats or whatever that roam in these warehouses. I found the Merrick brand at a pet store here but the Flossies weren't wrapped so they are going back to the store. It is a spirlal shapped bacteria that causes a lot of things (syphilis, Montazuma's revenge etc) but they are not related. This bacteria causes the diarrhea and cramps and the poor baby whined and cried all night Wed even when I held him. So be careful of unwrapped goodies that they will put in their mouths.

| Thats interesting. I often buy loose treats for Molly, but really hadnt thought about the mice and rats that are almost certainly running round those kinds of stores. The one i buy from has a resident cat, but im sure it wouldnt catch all of the 'intruders'!! |

Senior Yorkie Talker | im a microbiology major so ive studied spirochaetes somewhat.. thats really interesting to hear! Leptospirosis is caused by a spirochaete bacterium called Leptospira spp Leptospirosis is transmitted by the urine of an infected animal, and is contagious as long as it is still moist. Although rats, mice and voles are important primary hosts, a wide range of other mammals including dogs, deer, rabbits, hedgehogs, cows, sheep, raccoons, possums, skunks, and even certain marine mammals are also able to carry and transmit the disease as secondary hosts. Dogs may lick the urine of an infected animal off the grass or soil, or drink from an infected puddle. There have been reports of "house dogs" contracting leptospirosis apparently from licking the urine of infected mice that entered the house. Humans become infected through contact with water, food, or soil containing urine from these infected animals. This may happen by swallowing contaminated food or water or through skin contact.

| Brady hasn't been around any other animal or grass other than our own and the yard is fenced. He goes out once or twice a day but he doesn't stay out long because I worry about fleas and ticks here in Florida. I'm pretty sure now that he got it from the Flossies. I looked on Google and saw this bacteria causes syphilis, and some other things including Montazuma's revenge which is prevelant in countries like Mexico. I was careful when we were there and didn't even have ice in my water or eta raw veg. and no fruit!! I emailed Brady's breeder and she said "stay away from google" as all these things aren't related. So thankful Brady is back to his old self. It broke my heart listening to him cry. The breeder said to keep that medication on hand all the time.

YT 1000 Club Member | This is good to know because I have bought them unwrapped before. I do try to make sure I always buy the ones made right here in the U.S. From now on I'll make sure they're wrapped as well. Good info. thanks for posting this. |

| Himalayan Chew Sticks Sorry to hear about what poor Brady had to go through! Thanks so much for sharing this info. I used to give my Violet flossies, but everytime she chewed them, she got bad diarreah. So I stopped give them. I used to give her Bully sticks occassionally, but they get so wet and mucky, it makes her muzzle hairs all sticky. ugh. So I just don't bother with them any more. Has anyone heard of Himalayan chew sticks? They are make of cheese, and are very hard. (they smell like cheese). Violet LOVES chewing these, and she can chew them for hours if I let her. I like them because they stay hard and she can only chew tiny shaving off. |

| Thanks for telling me about the himalayan chew sticks. I agree that Bully Treats smell terrible - yuk!!! I'm concerned about Brady's teeth- even though we brush them at least 5 times a week small dogs are prone to bad teeth. I know from experience because Corky's (before Brady) had so much tartar and even cleaning them at the vet's didn't get it all off. He got congestive heart failure when he was around 10-11 and after researching this I found that the infected gums can cause this. I'll check the pet shops near here to see if they have the chew sticks as I'd rather not order and have to pay shipping. Where do you get them? Thanks for the info.
